My nights are not being any less disturbed. Saturday night the dogs got sprayed by a skunk. Sunday night it was too humid for me to sleep, and I got up to help one of the kids (Nugsy) at 4:00 and it took a while to get him back to sleep. Last night, there was an EPIC THUNDERSTORM with very loud, close thunder. One of the dogs (Sierra) was freaked out. One of the kids (Bubs) was scared when he woke up to pee and the power was out. The cat was up in my room. Nugsy was up early, and the cat was in the kids room ( a concerning combination...) We'll see what tonight has in store!

I actually feel better rested today, despite getting up early-ish. I have some quiet time atm, and I feel like I should be doing Something, but I'm not sure what. I do need to find some part time/temporary work here, as pets are expensive. I did get up to the archaeology museum today to talk to them about volunteering - I'll be going back on the 6th.

Ummm, what else? I've managed to do a little bit of writing - a couple of drabbles. But I feel like more is within my reach! I just need to decide where to focus... I want to finish the last of my last alphabet drabble challenge which was apparently, uh, from last year >.> So that I can do another one guilt free. I feel like starting something new and longer too, though I have some WIPs that need attention - we'll see. I wanted to try getting back into original fic as well, but that requires more solid ideas than I currently have :p

I think I mentioned already that [personal profile] longpig has gotten me going back to the gym? I need to be going at least twice a week, though, and haven't quite managed that. Hopefully we're going tonight though!

I've also been watching a lot mote TV here, for various reasons. Longpig is addicted to masterchef, so we burned through what was available of that, and she was bitter to realize that she's now caught up and can't binge! I've been watching Rescue Bots with the kidlets, which is adorable and I love it. And Hannibal, which hopefully will be picked up, because it really is quite good. And I watched the opening of the new season of True Detective last night which was slow.... but has some interesting potential. I think my favourite character, though, is Vince Vaughn's character's wife. The only main character whose name I remember is... haaa I forget the actress. But the lady cop, whose name is Antigone. Interesting choice thee, parents ;p

Anyway, that's all I've got. Gonna go walk the dogs before supper :)

I need my ink injection!

I'm leaving in an hour or so to go to Austin with [profile] malkontent. We're gonna crash at his parents' place overnight, and tomorrow at noon I have an appointment to get a new tattoo. I told my dad today (He and J skyped via ipad from bed in the middle of a tropical storm that had knocked out their power for 9 hours - gotta love modern technology!). Dad: "No! :(" Me "Yes. :D"

I can't remember if I posted anything much about it here - I am starting work on a sleeve of black and red spirals, and I may get another bran in there as well. Under the cut is the image I sent the artist )

In other news, I had another friend over yesterday to watch True Detective, and we got through the first five episodes. And then after he left, I want and watched most of the extras on the DVD set (which I bought when it was on sale for $25 on Amazon because GIMME). So now my head is all full of it again, and full of other things as well after listening to the writer and director comments on the episodes (not full commentaries - there are two and I haven't gotten to them yet). So what does this mean? It basically means that I probably will eventually finish the meta I started writing after the final episode. I'd been trying to sort out my impressions, and I think part of the reason I was finding it hard to write was just that it gave me *so much* closure that I was a little bit at a loss. I really loved that show, and I really hope that the next season is as good.

Sadly I don't have anywhere to watch it tonight :(

But I did want to say that whether or not we see anything overtly supernatural, that doesn't preclude it from being a legitimate way of interpreting what is going on. I keep seeing posts saying that we are not going to see anything, therefore this isn't "that kind of show", and I think that's doing a disservice. It doesn't have to be explicit. We don't need to see the King in Yellow show up, waving tentacles. We don't need to visit Carcosa. None of that is necessary for the story. But reading it in doesn't hurt - its interesting, and Nic Pizzolatto wouldn't have put it in if he didn't want us to consider the possibility. If Marty and Rust get their men, so to speak, if doesn't preclude the possibiliyt that these powerful men were colluding with otherwordly powers! Saying "its not that kind of show" feels dismissive to me, like not going the supernatural route somehow makes it "better". The ambiguity is, to me, part of the appeal.

That said, I do think that one of the draws of using a known fictional cult for the villains is that it sidesteps the issue of tar-brushing any actual real world religion with the idea that they are murderous pedophiles. They're using the revival churches as a cover, but it is just a cover - it's not what they do. He could have made up something, but from a metatextual perspective, it feels safer. But clever. That's all for now - see you again on Monday :3

I've fallen back out of the habit, just like that. Well, other than writing about True Detective stuff. I am looking forward to the last episode, but it also makes me super sad to think ti will be all over so soon ;_; I hope that the next installment is as good. I would love to pick Nic Pizzolatto's brains. And possibly find out if he has been stalking me ;p

But! That's now what I meant to write about!

Tomorrow, [personal profile] naryrising will be here! Excite!Considering I saw her technically twice last month, I am feeling rather spoiled, I tell you! We are goig to shill out a lot and watch tv and also stress about the games we are running next weekend for Webercon. I have mine a little bit more in hand now, I think, but I still have some things I need to write out and so forth. I have a vague plot outline in my head that I need to solidify, but mostly it is going to be just letting the players run with what I give them. I have, at least, given them characters at this point. Victory! The next thing to do is finish the bits that say what they all know about each other. Oh and probably I should give them stats and shit too. I need to refine my system a bit and post that as well. I'll get back to all that in a bit.

The other thing on my plate ATM is Invisible ficathon, which I think I have under control at least. I've got a few days to get it beta'd and posted, and I may try to do some other things as well, depending on where I am with gamestuff.

Other than that, what's up in my life is mostly work, which is worky. I finished the tiffany and today I finished the Mother of Pearl/Pearl Satinglass/ Pearl Satin Ware/Air-Trap/everyone has a goddamned different name for it, grr glass. Some of it was really pretty! Some of it was hideous. Sop very very hideous. I've been getting to play detective a bit though, learning about some of the less well known glass companies making this stuff. Like Phoenix Glass (Out of Ohio). And John Walsh Walsh (winner of more repetitive name. 19th century edition!). However today I realized that there are like 60 fewer boxes that I have to do than I realized. I've done almost 130, there are maybe 350? And a lot of the ones left also have fewer objects than the ones I have done, or they are not actually part of the collection that I was technically hired to do, maybe? I'm not sure. Anyway. We'll see how I get on with things, but I admit I am a little concerned about what will happen if I run out of things to catalogue :p However, I *am* signed up to take a two day training course on Crystal Reports later this month, which will be good to have under my belt even if I don't actually ever use it for this job. It is weird to feel like in terms of responsibility this job is actually a step *down* from my GA position, where I had more autonomy to take on projects and so on. I do think that it is in part a matter of having a different supervisor as well. It is a little strange to think about how long I have been working at the galleries, for that matter. I think I started at Stark in 2010?

Anyway, I don't have a lot else to say - just debating between trying to do a bit more game work or going to bed. Maybe I'll do some wind-down knitting. I had to rip back 7 rows earlier tonight because I can't count, and I still have 4 to catch up to where I was. *sigh*. Meanwhile, [profile] lonpig is down to the ribbing on the bottom of the sweater, meaning she only has that and the sleeves to go. It's okay though, she assures me it is not a race. First prize is a sweater. Second prize is also a sweater! Woohoo!

I apparently have good timing, as it started to really rain, rather than just spit and be aggressively misty, just as I was returning from walking Jola and picking up my Sunday morning Rudy's breakfast tacos. Nom.

I have chores to do today - cleaning the cat box, trimming the dogs nails, doing a load or two of laundry. I also want to work more on my LARP characters - if I can get 2 to 2 1/2 more of them done, that will be great!

I also would like to do a short true Detective drabble for Fan_Flashworks, since the prompt is Question. I want to do it form the POV of the cops who are doing the interrogation. Well, one of them. But I don't know which is which and only know their names from imdb /o\ Still, I should be able to manage something.

And I've also started knitting the sweater (ease) I am doing a knit-along with with [personal profile] longpig. It's goooorgeous and it is going pretty fast, really. Much faster than the vest (firelight) I've got going on as well, which is on much smaller needles on smaller yarn and has cables. I've got a lot of new Project Energy for ease, though, and I'm having to discipline myself to get anything else done! I'll probably ration myself out some in between my other chores and work for the day though, as well as knitting during game.

I am now almost finished my tea, and should get on with said chores, but I will leave you with some knitting pics below the cut )

I love Rust unapologetically. I love the character, I love Matthew McConnaughey's performance. And part of why I love him is because I am viewing him through a very specific lense. I see him as a very classic Lovecraftian type character - a dreamer, and investigator. There are some very complicated things intersecting here, and I think it explains him very beautifully. Lets see if I can express this at all coherently!

Cut for length - sorry! )

I'm linking the song that came up on lastfm while I was listening to this because it is atmospherically appropriate ;)
