I did dishes, whee!

I have actually done a bunch of 'for me' type productive things today. I have decided to use my spite as fuel and just send the forms I need to ECU to them, with everything all filled out, so all they need to do is sign them and mail them back. With a SASE, even.

I wasted some of mine (and belryan's, sorry again -_-) time trying to get my new social security card ordered. I always forget that i need certain letters from the school in addition to the I-20 and passport and ID. It isn'r made very clear on their site.... and in my defense one of the women I spoke to at ISS didn't even have a clue what i was talking about. I was all "I need exactly this for exactly these reasons!" And then she was like "You need what? Why?" Bah. The other chick was more on the ball, and they will e-mail me when it is all ready.

Between getting al this other stuff arranged, I did some reading for my directed studies, and got another book from the library - I need to e-mail Dr. H, though, which I'll do as soon as I'm done this entry.

Hmmm.... It felt like I got more done, but maybe not.

Oh, I didn't see the hawk again this afternoon. probably because I remembered my camera :V

I always felt that crime in Greenville was a little out of control when I was there -there were a lot of muggings, and break in and entries, and convenience stations and restaurants getting held up. I mean *really* a lot. I remember looking at crime statistics on the city while I was there, and they were quite high for that kind of crime as compared to the national average (which reminds me, I should check out the B/CS stats). Campus had its own police force, even. We used to get alerts notifying us of crimes on an almost weekly basis. It was the only place I've lived that made me nervous walking on my own late at night.

This morning I got an e-mail on the alumni list informing me about a shooting - a student in the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds after a gang of four (or maybe six) people, armed with a gun, a shotgun, and a knife, and robbed ten people *at a party a block away from campus*. On Monday night.

I should add that 4 suspects were rounded up within 5 min of the crime being reported, with two more arrested the next day. But still. I'm kind of in a 'how could that be allowed to happen!' sort of state. Also, following up from a post on speeding earlier this week by gwengothelf, I don't really see how their recommendations on safety really have any impact on this kind of crime. Don't walk alone at night? How is that going to stop a group (I hesitate to use the word 'gang' *really*) of armed people from crashing your party? Security cameras? Buses to and from campus and downtown at night? That shit is fine for mugging, but really that's not the problem here!

Bah.

I love the fact that I have old profs who, when I write to tell them let them know about certain stories I am having published and ask how they have been doing respond with things like "Too much gaming, too little time!"

Material Culture and Maritime Identity: Identifying Maritime Subcultures through Artifacts.

Piracy was a significant facet of late seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century maritime culture, yet archaeological contributions to our knowledge of piracy are few. They are fewer still in reference to pirate interaction ashore. Material from a handful of land sites with known piratical association, contrasted with artifacts from contemporaneous non-maritime sites, provides a starting point for investigating whether or not material culture assemblages can provide any insight into differences between pirates (and other maritime cultures) and those of the general land-based society. Where these differences do exist, they may provide insight into issues of identity within these groups.

So, Nadine was just here! I think she will do well at ECU - she already knows what she wants to do, and she has the contacts to do it here. So good for her :) She also gave me money for the deposit, etc, which is good. I'll call the guy tomorrow and make sure everything is okay, and check when I have to move out, etc. I need to find a place on Texas, but if Nadine isn't planning to move *in* until around the 14th, I'll have a little longer to move *out*, I hope! And my rent is all payed, etc, so that's good. I have the deposit, and I am told that I will get a finder's fee for, well, finding a new renter. Anyway, it is all good, and now I am going to the bank. Also i am going to go up to the Toronto School of Art and drop of a model thingy form thing. Yay thingy!

Tonight Rob and I are going to try and see Pirates of the Caribbean at the midnight showing somewhere. Yay Pirates!

What else? I worked more on Ice yesterday, and I am hoping that I can get back to writing a little bit at least each day. I want to finish that by the end of the month, at the latest, so that I can see about sending it off somewhere. I think I'll start with Apex. I don't want to get too far ahead of myself though - I have to finish the story first :) I think it is good now, and will be very good when it is done. I think I am achieving everything I want to do with it. It makes me very happy. Yes. Ice.

Now I am off!

...actually, screw it. I am going to stay in and write, and do that other stuff tomorrow before or after I get my tattoo :V

I just spent an hour trying to pick the lock on my chest. No luck. I guess I'm just not a Rogue! :V

Looking around the internet for keys is not working out so well either :(

I also did that thing again last night where I barely slept :p

Well, I guess it is time for lunch - then to school to re-print parts of the thesis and hope it's all good -_-

I finished editing my thesis, and made plans with C&M for tomorrow. I am going to bring over a quiche because, well, I need to use my eggs and a quiche will go pretty far for that! :o I may also make some other kind of baked good to use up other stuff. However I have to get milk for the quiche, which is kind of a pain ;)

What else did I do tonight... I was going to work on writing, but I ic'd instead! Then I posted an asston of logs. And I also did some packing. And laundry! Crap, I still have a load to dry, hmmm... guess it will have to wait until morning :p

Anyway, a productive evening, I think. Although this is the first day in quite a while that I haven't done any kind of 'creative' writing (well, if I count yesterday's Magical Adventure, which I clearly do ;) but I looked at stuff, so that must count :D Tomorrow if I get a chance, I will work more on Ice.

Things I need to do tomorrow include:

It went fine. I don't have to change my signature page, and that was my biggest worry. I do have some other changes to make, but they won't take me long. I go back at 2:30, after my doctor's app at 1:00. Woot!

I think I'll fix things now while they are fresh in my mind. There! I don't even have to re-print everything, just:

Yes, here I am in the Eller computer lab, yet again. I thought I'd be done with this all by now, but apparently not!

I had a nice lunch with Dr. Ewen, and ran into Chris, and made tentative plans for this evening to do.... something? Well, I will call their house once I get back from my meeting, unless I have major changes to make. I really hope that I don't, so that I can get this stuff delivered to the library tomorrow. I'm not really expecting to be able to pick stuff up before I leave though - I expect I'll have to get my copies when I come back to sort out my crap.

What else... I guess that's it for the moment, really. once I have my thesis all finished and approved and shiny, I'm going to see if there is anyone around who has a program that I can use to PDF it. I believe that somewhere in Eller there exists a copy of Acrobat Professional which should do the trick. Ahh, and I even found which computer it is on. Awesome. This means that I can burn copies to disk for people, woo-hoo! I will send copies to people whose stuff I used (Nevis guy and Barcadares guy). This will also be good for relaying copies to anyone else who might want one, or if I want to put it online. In fact if I do this, I suspect that the department will link to it online :) So that's keen.

I am wondering if there is something I can get published out of this. I might ask Carl. Technically I could go over there right now and ask, hmmm... nah. The bees are attacking and I don't really want to do much wandering around. Otherwise I might go to the library.

Bah! I wish I'd thought to bring something else to work on or read or what have you, but I was kind of in a hurry when I left the house. Anyone out there alive have suggestions as to what I could to to kill time for an hour?
