Day eleven:
I stopped my the Antiquities, Museums and monuments corp and dropped off the books I borrowed from my contact - I ought to send him an e-mail, but I haven't been arsed yet. Then to the archives, where I had another day of looking at stuff that was *interesting* if not 100% helpful. I left at 4:45, and it was raining, of course. The crazy hard rain had passed and it was just drizzling when I left, but the consequence was that there were *huge* puddles everywhere and I pretty much couldn't get anywhere without wading through ankle deep puddles and/risking getting run over. So I wandered until I found a bus stop with some buses, hopped on one, and had a mini adventure through the ghetto of Nassau! It wasn't a *random* bus, really - I knew it would get me downtown eventually, but it sure did go through some slumy areas! They call it 'over-the-hill' - it is where the original black settlements were, unsurprisingly, so the streets are crowded and the houses are tiny, and the white folks don't have to look at it. Well, the tourists, that it, there aren't that many native whiteys left around here, i don't think. They're all off inbreeding midgets in Spanish Wells. Anyway, I saw at least one yard that had goats!
I got back to the hotel, chilled for a bit, and then tried to decide what to do for dinner on my meat day. in the end, I went back to The Clay Pot, the Indian place, and had some kind of thin ground lentil soup, shish kebab and garlic nan. It was good - I'd been thinking I wanted lamb while I could get it, but I found myself wishing I'd gone for chicken. Ahh well. After that i came back, hung out online chatting , and did some typing, and went to bed early. To be honest I am missing the company of actually people at this point, so it is harder for me to get enthused about things.
Day twelve:
Got up relatively early, came online and chatted with ian while I tried to figure out what to do. Decided to go out, try and find some better beach sandals and some books, and then go to the beach. I wound up spending like 100$ on books, and left with two history books (one of which is hard to find elsewhere, but this store had a section of Bahamian stuff), The Catcher in the Rye, The Brothers Karamazov (based on Rumor's high recommendation) and maaaaybe a present for someone reading this ;) Most of their non fiction was classics - they had some of the Hornblower books, but I would rather start with the first, which they didn't. I had lunch at a jamaican place called The pepper Pot, where I had snapper escovitche (sp?) which was yummy. Snapper is a very tasty fish indeed, but of course I need not have worried that UHF would have lied to me (Wheeeel! Of! Fiiiiiiiish!). Came back and dropped off my purchases and got together my stuff my afternoon adventures!
I then set out to find this little aquarium/marina I'd heard about, only to hear that it was closed. But the guy I talked to was really nice and I am going to go back to his restaurant after I finish typing this ;) So then I went to the beach, where I read well over half of CitR, went swimming a number of times, and burnt my legs in a rather amusing pattern. I was leaning forward reading, see... I'm sure you can imagine. Jitneyed back in town, bought some aloe-y after sun stuff (couldn't find any pure aloe, alas - kind of ironic as it is on the list of traditional local 'bush medicines'), showered, slathered on said gel, and came down here to type this up while I am in the mood! I am going to go have dinner at that place I mentioned (Seafood Heaven - I thik I'll try cracked conch), and go to the festival that got rained out last week. I still have 15 of the special money you need to buy things, but I'll probably spend it on pudding and liquor. I'm feeling better today than yesterday (less lonely, that is), despite my sunburn, and I hope the festival atmosphere will be good and not depressing. Whee!
