So I got up late - I was woken up in the night by the ferocity of the rain storm, woke up at seven, and then slept until ten, completely missing the free breakfast. Thenm I had to decide twhat to do on a day where it was exceedingly likley to pour rain at some point.
I dicked about online for a while, then ventured down to Starbucks where I had a banana coconut frappacino and a pineapple danish. Welcome to the tropics, I guess :V The I set out my plan for the day. back to the hotel, pack my bookbag to carry various adn sundry potentially useful things, and the a jitney (bus) out to Arawak Cay to check out the Junkanoo Summer Festival which was to start around 2. I realized that Arawak Cay was a lot closer than I expected, and I could have easily walked but hey, the trip was a dollar. I got there peobably around 12, and things were still setting up. I wandered around the cay and took a picture of a guy cracking conchs. With not much else to see there except the various restaurants assoiciated with the fish fry.
So I decided to take a wander up to Fort Montague, built in 1787 (I believe). It is litterally carved into the oolithic limestone, which is kind of nifty. But like all the other forts ever constructed in the Bahamas, it was kind of crappy and didn't really do its job :V But it was neat to visit.
After hiking up the hill and wandering through the fort (the highest ground on the island, as far as I could see), I decided to head for.... the zoo! The Adarasta zoo and gardens, which was cool. They had monketys, and 'marching' flamingos (basically herded flamingos, but hey, not bad for flamingos :V), and lots and lots of birds. And meercats! And a variety of other cool small hunting cats like ocelots and one that I forget the name of but had gorgeous ears - pictures eventually!
I wandered back downtown, saw that the festival wasn't really gearing up yet, and decided to test the length of the walk back downtown. It really wasn't long, even though I dabbled my toes in the water on the way back. I then realrranged what I was carrying, drank about a liter of water to kill the dehydration headache I was sporting (despite having had like a liter and a half of water already), and walked back towards the festival. STil not all the food people were operations, but I grabbed a pina colada pudding from the desert tent, and a strawberry daquiri (virgin I suspect, alas), and settled in to watch a cooking demonstration of a guy making grouper kebabs with pineapple mango salsa. There were free samples, yum! I hung around for a bit, waiting to be hungry again so I could get some real food (notice how I haven't had much to eat today). Eventually I headed over to the roasted corn vendor, and then boom! A gale hit. I thought some of the tents were going to be blown away! I huddled with a bunch of other people for a while, waiting for it to abate, and it never really did. I helped some people get back towards their car, planning to run to where the jitneys should be. I managed to catch one before I was utterly soaked, but it was a close thing! The jitney went all the way out to cable beach before it came back downtown, which kind of sucked, especially when it stopped to get gas, but I made it back alive, so whatever ;)
I zipped up to the hotel, and changed out fo wet clothes into clothes that I would be getting wet shortly, on my way here, for the beginning of game, so here's hoping it is worth it :V
I have to pee ;_;
