Heather's Great Bahamian Adventure Day 3: Did I mention the parrot?

I had some further adventures last night - I went out and meandered around Woodes Roger Walk, which is a little promenade area down on the waterfront, across form Paradise Island. I prowled by the HIlton and took a picture of the stature of WR there - mystery solved, he is pulling a pistol! Action Shot! It was night though anc I coudln't get a great look - I guess I'll need to go back and look again in the day, hmm? Good thing it is literally just around the corner from me ;)

Aftrer that, I had dinner at the restaurant across ther street from the Hilton - conch fritters (eh, they were okay - deep fried dumplings with bits of ground up seacreature that I couldn't really taste), and a Bahama Mama (three kinds of rum! and fruit punch), sauntered back to the hotel, and read until midnight.

Actualy, I also had a shower. And if I thought the showers I had to deal with iun the UK were bad.... This was like having someone pee on your head when they had only had a little glass of juice all day. Talk about no water pressure! I seriously had to rince my hair in the sink, and that wasn't much better.

This morning I woke up late, and had better luck withy breakfast. The muffin looking things are, in fact, muffin shaped biscuits, and go well with jam and cheese. I had tea. Then I was super slow setting out... and I wound up taking the bus instead of walking! The bus here is a dollar, whee! Now if I only understood how the routes worked o_O Then I could bus both ways without fear :V

My dayt at the archives was, as I predicted, more *interesting* if ot more useful. Not too much info to be gleaned from the Proceedings of the Governour and Council, but a lot of extra insight into some stories I already knew. I even got to read some new tuff about Woodes Rogers - sadly it was from the period when he was at his most pathetic, going around trying to recouperate his finances, and on the edge of a nervous breakdown. I think - I am pretty sure it was before he declared personal bankrupcy, but I'm not sure. Anyway, the council were jerks to him, the jerks.

My lunch was interesting.... I almost didn't take one again, but I am glad I diud. I went to this little Hiatian restaurant. I was wandering by looking around, and a guy stepped out and asked me how I wqas - I said I was hungry :V And then I was ushered inside this little take away type place where I eventually ordered fish (they didn't have a menu - seriously, they just asked me what I wanted, as though I might somehow psychically know about Haitian food :o) It took a while, so I chatted with the guys in the shop. One of them, an older guy named Leon, insisted on giving me is phone number, hee. They were all quite nice, and I practiced my French a bit, and they told me this was my restaurant and that I should come in anytime. They gave me some peanuts that one of them had bought. The fish was interestig. It was definitely a fish, that's for sure! It had a tail still. It was delicious-interesting, I should confirm - not too spicy, but very yum. There were also fried plaintains (yum!), salad, some kinf of spicy coleslaw, and beans and rice. Waaaaay too much food for me, though I managed to eat more than just half the fish. Seriously, it was a big fish! Anyway, I will be going back there again. It was only ten dollars, but I think they were being extra nice with me ;)

I walked back again - it is really not too long a walk, or at least it is not longer than I am willing to walk, given that I had lots of water and sunscreen and there is lots to see here still. I took some pictures of parliament (I think) - the government buildings here have a great colour schele of being bright pink with white trim and dark green shutters. Yeah...

I stopped to investigate another internet cafe on my way back - it closes earlier :/ *Everything* here seems to close early, bah! Well, not the bars, I suppose. I also stopped by the Hagendaaz store that is right donw the block ;) Yum! bAnd then I got waylaid by a nice realotor talking about how he wants to entice more Canadians to come to the Bahamas ;) Which reminds me - half the banks here, possibly more, are Canadian. Everywhere I turn it is all Scotiabank and RBC! Wish there was a TD though - can't have everything.

...and did I mention the parrot? His nme is Raffles, I think. I could be pulling that out of my ass - he is sitting behind me, squaking the occasional hello or unintelligible grunt as I type this.

Now I'm going to go lie down, maybe, and read, maybe, and eventually go out and investigate that Greek place I keep walking by...

Yay, glad you had better luck with the archives and food stuff today! What are you actually looking for in the archives, btw?

I am looking for information about the early settlements on some of the Out Islands - and I'm not really finding anything of use. To the point which, having been there two days, I am havinfg a hard timing motivating myself to go out there toiday because I'm not suree ifd there is much more to look at. they have very little from the early colonial period, and like 90% of that is talking about New Providence/Nassau. I was hoping that going through the old council minutes would give me a better sense of who was living where, and how they all related (at least politically), and it only kind of sort of did. There isn't even much to give me more of a sense of maritime orientation that I got from looking at the calendar of State paper - less, even.

So I think next week I'll take a feerry out to the islands I want to work on and get some pictures and maybe talk to people, after I talk to the guy here, which I'll do maybe tomorrow or Monday.

Okay, thanks for asking a random question that helped me organize myself and my thoughs, whee!

Aw, poor Woodes Rogers! I'm glad you're having a good time, though I wish your studies were yielding more.

I love Caribbean food. The fish sounds like snapper, which is what they usually serve here in the U.S. It is not "red" snapper but some other smaller and sweeter one. Spanish snapper, perhaps?
