I would love to have a piece of Ammolite.  I saw a teensy unset or cut polished piece in a store once for about 200$ (if I am remembering correctly).  It is iridescent, the same way labradorite is, only in bright reds, greens, blues and yellows.  I fell in love.

It is a flake-y stone, though, so it is often set with epoxy and/or (if especially cheap) caped with glass.  Those versions seem to run about 50$ for an unset cut stone.  The really expensive ones, the triplets, are, well, gorgeous but retardedly expensive!

...Someday!

What's the date on the Bon Porte wreck?

Claire's presentation handout says 510-1540 BC

I'm going with 525!

But if so, then wouldn't it be the same date as Jules Verne VII?

Yeah, I noticed that too.... They are 525-510 on Claire's handout. I mean, it is in the date range - they *do* overlap, or are certainly not far off each other! Max of 30 years for the oldest Bon Porté date and youngerst Jules Verne...

Right, but I figured that this whole thing was predicated on Bon Porte being older than Jules Verne VII because Jules Verne is a hybrid and Bon Porte isn't. Or are we just going with the theory that Bon Porte was a local build and Jules Verne was an Eastern Med. build and was repaired locally, and thus the "wave effect"?

The latter, I suspect - both Jules Verne wrecks are contemporaneous, and they are obviously of different constructions.

It is sometimes mislabeled as Fire Opal, so keep your eyes out for that as well. Mislabeled means cheaper, of course. Also, hit up ebay. and stone wholesalers.

Ammolite is very expensive because it is pretty rare. My brother has a bunch of ammonites with ammolite in them which were prizes for postera at conventions he's taken part in. It is quite beautiful.

They do mine it in southern Alberta. My brother and a bunch of his geologist friends were out on a field trip one day, and they stumbled onto an ammolite stake... and left quickly, as it was protected by armed guards. Armed guards!
