Just checking in/Webercon report
*Waves at the internet world*
So, last week,
naryrising was visiting! It was super awesome to spend so much time with her! And then last weekend we got to go to Webercon, and see a bunch of other people I don't get to see in person all that much, for a full weekend of gaming. We got in on Thursday and got to go out to the pasture to meet
kennesaw's parents cows. Babby cows! Some of them will eat right out of your hand :3
Friday the games started - I was running in the opening slot, a Diablotin one-shot set something like 40-50 years before the very first campaign. It went really well! I am trying not to give out too many details, as I plan to run it again for the other players in the current campaign, assuming inters/availability. I may need to make a new character or two for it, though, if everyone can/wants to play - we'll see :3 It dealt with the Wererat people living under the city.
That afternoon, I played my first taste of D&D Next (5th Edition) - it seemed okay, but it wasn't much to judge by. I didn't hate it and there were some neat things for combat. The module was fun and I liked my character - half-orc fighter who grew up an urchin and then joined the guard, who broke his old street friends out of jail to go on a quest to get them a pardon. He was not the smartest guy, maybe, but he had heart!
Friday I played
kennesaw's Call of Cthulhu game, which was neat. It was fairly subtle horror thing, not how CoC games are typically characterized - it was not designed to be fatal, but more subtly horrific. It was the pathfinder system using (I think) the d20 system sanity loss rules, where the GM tracks how crazy you go over time. All of the characters were derived from original Lovecraft stories - I played an elf, and
naryrising played my half-elven sister, and we'd basically lived through The Color Out Of Space. In this story, we were investigating the disappearance of an ally that all the characters had in common. It turned out that the inn where we were staying was part of some creepy larger local cult. We didn't get to look into it much more, as most of us were already pretty crazy by the time we found out the innkeeper was butchering people and feeding them to his visitors. Also there was some kind of creepy heart in a box. The setting was really cool - a fantasy altered version of real-world early colonial setting. There were some pretty clear analogues to modern historical politics and systems, but nothing that mapped perfectly. I would definitely like to poke around in it more!
In the afternoon,
naryrising ran her Diablotin game - I knew a little bit about stuff because I'd helped her with some minor bits, like characters and such, but it was really cool! I know she is going to re-run it for people as well, so I won't spoil. We had one guy playing who was both very young (well, relatively, he was legally drinking, at least) and very drunk, but it was still tonnes of fun. We played poker in character :V Plus the ending was really awesome ^-^
Sunday there was only one game slot, as people usually pack up. I played KM's D&D-ish game "The Villager is You", in which we were 0 level villagers dealing with a rat infestation - it turned out the rats were intelligent, of course! We surprised her my not trying to kill them and thus getting murderated ourselves, and managed to make peace with them ^-^ We all had 10s in 4/6 stats, and then one at 12 and one at 8. We didn't have names so much as roles - I was the innkeeper's heir, and not very clever. But that just made things more entertaining as I could posit some really ridiculous notions - "Its those adventurers that went up to the wizard's tower - they GOT TURNED INTO RATS :V :O :O" I wasn't too far off - they were wizard experiments that escaped after the adventurers killed the wizard :)
I wrote another series of drabbles based on all the games I was in (we had 2 games running in almost every slot, so I missed out on some things), which you can look at over here if you like, though I don't promise they will make sense (and the Diablotin ones are spoilery, especially the first): Webercon 2015 Drabbles
Other than the games and the company, the food this year was really excellent! We all kind of bring our own, but people can volunteer to provide larger meals for everyone if they are feeling inclined - and lots of people were feeling inclined this year! Plus we are a group with a lot of good cooks who are experiences at providing for larger groups. The timing on stuff all worked out pretty well, even!
Thursday after everyone was gone, we went to the local BBQ place which was really quite excellent even though I'd been pushing for a place that is further away but also super excellent. They were out of almost everything but brisket, but brisket was what I wanted, and it was super delicious! Their sauce was sweeter than I would have preferred, but that was my only complaint.
Friday morning, Bysmarian and, uh, let's call her QuietKM (KM's sister, married to Bysmarian) made really delicious blueberry muffins. At "lunch" (~5) KM and A had adobo chicken ready, for which we had brought taco seasonings. And then at "dinner" (around 11:00) we had spaghetti and meatballs provided by
malkontent and CP (his wife). I forwent the pasta and just had delicious meat sauce on garlic bread, om nom nom...
Saturday morning, A made cowboy bread, which is a a pull-apart bread with bacon, cheese, eggs and biscuits. For lunch (at actual lunch time!) we had Korean style beef and rice made by QueenofInsanity6, and then for dinner we had really good pulled pork by Bysmarian and QuietKM. There was a sweet vinegary sauce and a mustard based one. And I picked up a nice cheap butt roast at the store yesterday to try and recreate the former :)
Sunday someone got together leftover stuff and we had breakfast tacos :D And then on the way home on Sunday we stopped in a cafe in Luling, Tx for dinner, which was pretty decent.
Other than that, it was great to see people, and meet a few new folks! My game groups tend to not fit standard 'gamer' demographics, so there were more women in attendance than men (by one, or maybe two, because I think one of the people I didn't get to talk to much is a little more genderfluid? I know they are present that way some online by their partner, but I don't know them well >.>), and more women running games than men (5 women, 3 guys.... One guy ran 2 games). Also, all the new people were partners brought in by women who had been members of the core group for much longer. We played a bunch of Telephone Pictionary, which is always great in larger groups, and one round of the card game that
kennesaw is working on developing. It is complicated but fun! Watch this space for a kickstarter some day ;) Some other folks played other kinds of pick-up games. We also watched a ton of Gravity Falls - it seems like each year we sort of unofficially settle on one show to mainline, and it was this year's pick. And of course there was a lot of staying up late taking about random rap and just hanging out - an exhausting weekend, but truly excellent!
So, last week,

The food descriptions sound fantastic too!

Cons are much less overwhelming when you know 90% of the people involved and can be sure that everything will be awesome ^-^
