I watched the movie Fido tonight. It was a little fantastic. The world needs more ZOMCOM. Not more ZomCon, though, possibly.

It is the story of a boy and his Zombie. The zombie is Billy Connoly. The flick also has Carrie-Anne Moss, of Matrix fame, rocking some 50's styles.

It is clever, and funny, and I recommend it to my fellow zombie flick fans!

Also, it has the bacony scent of Canada all over it, which is extra awesome.

...okay there was just a drunk lady singing Edelweiss outside my window o_O She actually had a pretty nice voice all things considered. But I'm still going to close it before I go to sleep. In like, a minute. Zzzzzzz

I just saw Elizabeth II: Revenge of the Catholics.

Leaving aside all the other historical issues, how could you make a movie that is ostensibly about the Spanish Armada and not even mention Sir Francis Drake?

It boggles the mind...

Tomorrow, I am gong to go see the transformers movie. I neeeed to see it! Need! So, I am going to bus to school, bus to the mall, and then walk to the theater, catch an afternoon matinee, and then do the same in reverse. In order to watch a film on my own. Maybe this is a sad thing to do. Maybe it is the beginning of a strange and beautiful tradition. Who can say, at this point?

Said William Randolph Hurst...

"You provide the prose poems I'll provide the war." - Citizen Kane

I watched Citizen Kane tonight with LeeAnne - damned good movie, all around. Another one to wave in [livejournal.com profile] forthright's face when he says bad things about old movies ;p It had a lot of really interesting political and social commentary in there. I don't want to spoil the ending (which is an odd thing to say about a movie going on 70 years old, but hey - I didn't know the end... So I'll put comments under this cut! )

Anyway, I liked it! Besides plot, the sets were stunning, the acting was strong, and it really did pioneer a lot of techniques that have become classic. It is almost hard to appreciate now, in the way of many things that started something that has since become cliché...

Oh there is one other thing that is nagging at me. The line where Bernstein says that there are a lot of statues in Europe that he hasn't bought yet, and Kane replies "You can't blame me. They've been making statues for some two thousand years, and I've only been collecting for five." I am sure I have seen this paraphrased elsewhere and I wondered if it, like the Hurst line, might have come from somewhere else originally? I guess it has been around for almost 70 years though, so I'm probably crazy and it was a quote from the movie :V

It has been a busy week!

I had a presentation to give on Tuesday, which apparently went swimmingly. Tuesday night I had a meeting with some classmates to go over the readings for the Theory class we are in, but in the end a lot of the stuff we focused on never came up in class - i just hope people still found it was useful. i thought it was at least interesting. Wednesday was class, then more class. After class, I went to see babel with L'Annie, because movies here are really cheap, and she is a film person, and Oscars are coming up, and she and Claire are hosting an Oscars party, and so forth. What I am trying to do here is justify what I put myself through - that was the most seriously awful film I have sat through. It wasn't even funny bad just "Christ I hate all you people it is over yet!?" bad. I probably could have convince L'Annie to leave before it was over. As it was, she didn't stay for the credits, which is saying a lot because she always stays for the credits. After that we got food and lamented wasting time and money on that steaming pile of dogcrap. Short review: don't waste your time/money, just ask a local hobo to vomit on you and you'll just about get the same experience :p

After *that*, i went to [livejournal.com profile] tethys123's place, and watched another installment of Rome, which is fantastic. Only watching one ep a week is kiiiiiling me, as I am a binge tv watcher. And then we went to O'Bannons, because Wednesday is the anth pub night. I shouldn't have gone though - I was too tired to really socialize much, and on top of that we wound up being there stupidly late. Which seems odd as now I'm not sure who among us actually wanted to be there that long o_O. Anyway.

Yesterday and today were gym days, and I'm paying, oh, yes, paying early. in a good way.... I did back hyperextensions yesterday for the first time. Easy, too easy, until i realized that i'm supposed to be using my core muscles to pull myself up, which I wasn't doing. the next set was not so easy D: That was yesterday. Today, I bench pressed... the bar. Oooh, I'm mighty ;) It's a start though. And this with a bunch of other weight machines and such. I can't figure ou where they are hiding the dumbbells... Tomorrow, though, I will have major pains, I am positive. I think that I will leave thursday as a leg day, friday arms, and then use Mondays as a core day, if that's feasible. I need to poke around Stumptuous more.

Apart from that, I've collected and started reading the book for my first Rigging assignment. I'm reading A Cruising Voyage Round the World by Woodes Rogers. I love that man. I would go back I time and have his babies. No one knows anything about his wife - it could be me ;) he was hardcore awesome in a zillion different ways. Let me enumerate a few:

-Privatter durinfg the War of Spanish Succession
-circumnavigated the globe in 1708
-second person ever to capture one of the Spanish Manilla Fleet galleons in the Pacific
-Got shot in the jaw during an engagement - continued to give orders in writing from where he'd fallen on the deck for the rest of the fight
-Shot in the heel in a second engagement shortly after, continued to give orders then too and refused to be carried below
-rescued Alexander Selkirk left behind on the island of Juan Fernandez in 1704 by William Dampier, and who was the basic for Robinson Crusoe.
-was badass enough that William Dampier was willing to serve under him - after Dampier had been famous for years in his own right as a navigator/captain/naturalist/etc
-successfully kept his crew in lone during the course of his circumnavigation, and handily dealt with the few inevitable mutinies that arose
-had a relative;y low death rate for a circumnavigation
-Governor of the Bahamas in 1718 - pretty much singlehandedly responsible for rooting out the pirates there, more or less
-wasn't originally re-employed as governor, but was so awesome that the bahamians petitioned to have him reinstalled
-was deemed incredibly awesome by many contemporary bigshots, including Hans Sloan (none of you will probably know who he was :p) and Joseph Addison (Secretary of State 1711-1718) and such
-had an awesome personal/familial motto - Dum Sipro, Spero - While I Breathe I Hope
-was generally a great navigator, and leader

Eta
-not a bad looking gent neither ;) You can even just about make out the scar on his left cheek where he was shot
-did I mention that he swallowed part of his own jaw after that wounding? Hardcore! D:

Anyway, he was right awesome. I read 100 pages today, and hope to be done the book by Sunday. Tonight i am going to finish and hopefully post my latest section of Shadows, damnit! I can't believe it is taking so long. I blame the fact that I'm getting better at timing when I have to catch the bus, and the fact that it is cold not motivating me to go early to get more writing done :p

harry Potter and the Naked Rider?

I would go see that, though. I like the play, creepy as it is. I think that was one of my first dates with Joel, actually, going to see Equus :o And DR is a good actor, and Kenneth Brannagh is also keen... I can just imagine him recruiting people to audition while on the set for Chamber of Secrets whenever ago that was ;)

It's been a long time since I went to see a play.... On the other hand I saw a poster advertising that there are Taiko drummers coming to A&M on Feb 16... I wonder if anyone would go with me? And how much they are, that too :o I should also look into the ballet stuff in Houston or Austin or wherever it was that had cheapass student tickets.

I had a really great time tonight. I got to hang out with people in person! it was not the people I'd *planned* on hanging out with, however, and i apologize to them -_-

Claire, a girl in my program, thought it would be a good idea to get people together to pick up the drafting supplies we will need for one of our classes from a local hobby shop (well really it is a big chain shop, but whatever) - we could all go together, so that everyone would have rides and also all be able to find and get what we need. So, I went and did that. And then we were silly for a bit in said shop, and then some of us went out and had dinner at a big fake Irish pub the name of which I forget. They had a menu where everything seemed to revolve around Guiness, however. I had the Guiness bacon cheeseburger or somesuch. It was huge, and delicious! I am sure I am spelling Guiness wrong, but anyway.

After that, it was just me, Claire, and Leanne, and we brought Leanne's dvd player over here and hooked it up to watch Velvet Goldmine. VG is one of those films that I'm not sure how I had avoided seeing it previously, but of course enjoyed! I think those two are Good People. I could tell about Claire after I noticed she was wearing the One Ring on a chain around her neck. Now if she'd been wearing in on her *finger* I may have worried ;)

We are planning to go see Snakes on a Plane, and possible see PotC2 (again), since Claire hasn't seen it. Both of these options please me.

In other other news, obviously my home internet is restore, and working better than ever. I have also managed to set up my laptop to use the school's wireless network, so score!

I am considering seeing if I can get in to check out the local LARP game on Friday as well - we will see what else is happening. However, I definitely want to see those people some more, as they were also quite fun. There may be room for overlap as well :o

Happy Birthday to my dad, who I was not able to call as planned because of the above impromptu socializaion, and more properly to my sister, who I hope receives her present soon :o

This looks like a fun movie! Just ignore thew horses. There are no horses in this film, move along ^-^

You don't have to ignore Karl Urban (Eomir! <3!) thought! ^-^ Especially not when he is shirtless with a sword. Or the pretty Viking ships. Although yo do have to not ask exactly what they are doing there, dum de dum... ^-^
