Over the last couple moths, I've run into various bits of information on bananas - for one thing about how there is a blight affecting the Cavendish, currently, and it isn't expected to last a whole lot longer as a variant. Ahh monoculture, how foolish you are.

One of these informations, an NPR show all about bananas and some banana connoisseur, who talked about how there are actually a lot of different tasty bananas available but they aren't really on the commercial market for sale in stores... I dunno what they do with them though ;p Possibly some are used for banana flavourings or other non-fresh-fruit purposes.

Anyway, knowing that our current banana is doomed and hearing good things about other types, I decided to pick up a bunch of *red* bananas, as I see them in the stores here quite often.

They're really good! I looked them up on wikipedia, and what it says seems generally true, save that mine are from Ecuador, not Costa Rica. They're creamier (oh so much more deliciously creamier) than the Cavendish, are a bit pinkish in the flesh, and have a very slight berry-ish taste/aftertaste. I am pleased with my purchase, A++, would buy again!

In other news, I submitted my stuff to get reimbursed for my trip and on the way home, I decided to go to Goodwill. Okay, the bus that goes down that way came before mine did, and since Jola is at the vet (no puppies for her!) I figured it wouldn't hurt. I came away with 4 dresses, a pair of shoes, a pair of shorts, and a cool brass box with a glass top. Score! I may wind up giving one of the dresses to [livejournal.com profile] longpig when I see her in August unles I really fall in love with it before then. It is green, and while it fits and looks good on me, I think it might be better on her.
