Conference Summary
I promised high points and you shall have them! However I have to admit one further disappointment – I missed a paper on Bahamian stuff because the hotel restaurant had really slow service. On the other hand I got to catch up with Dina more and hey gave us free fries. In general, I have spent too much money on food at this conference. It doesn’t help that I ordered roomservice tonight, but I didn’t want to leave the hotel and couldn’t put together a big enough order for delivery. But hey, I said positive, so onwards!
-The Symposium I participated in was really interested, and I think my paper was pretty good. I have a weird physical-mental disconnect though, so I was acting physically nervous although I didn’t feel that way psychologically, if that makes any sense. No one told me I did badly, though. I hope that they would. On the other hand no one told me I did really *well* either. So, medium. I’m really not sure how to fix that – it doesn’t seem like there is much I can do to prepare myself for something that is subconscious. There were some other really good papers, though!
-Some of the other sessions and papers I went to were quite good, most of which I’ve already mentioned. Some of the Caribbean ones I *did* catch this afternoon should go on that list.
-Tucanos, the Brazilian Grill. Oh gods, so good! The grilled pineapple was especially delicious.
-Catching up with various and sundry from ECU. I think I a getting to the point where I even will have some ‘conference friends’ – people I know mainly through conference contacts, who I have met through other friends. Both times I went down to the bar tonight, I ran into people I knew and wound having good social times.
-Maybe I will collaborate with one ECU fellow on a paper or publication of some sort, though it is really outside the realm of experience of either of us (*especially* me D:), so further research is necessary first. We’ll see. Could be fun though :)
-Old Town Albuquerque has a soul. Lots of art galleries and grift stuff, some of which was really quite nice. My favourite bit was the vndors outside of one of the sops witting on blankets selling jewellery…. Including a $4000 bracelet. Yeah. It was incredibly nice though – worth it. Hey wouldn’t let me take pictures. Apparently made by one of the top native/Indian artists in the country. Being sold on a blanket outside a giftshop. That says something, though I’m not sure whether it is about the buyers or sellers or both! I bought myself some hair thingies. Little leather wraps that kind of lace up for binding your hair in pigtails.
-I went to see Atonement with Dina. It was good, but not amazing. We wanted to see Juno, but it wasn’t playing at the close theater.
-I think the altitude here really agrees with me. My lungs have been really happy. My hair has been well mannered, if staticky. My hands are dry but that’s easily cured.
-Gourmet cupcakes. Seriously.
I’m sure there was/is more, but I am getting sleepy, and I think I’ve digested enough to go to sleep, so I’m signing off. See you in Dallas ;p
