Population of Harbour Island in 1731: White men: 31. White women: 27. Children: 102. That's like 4/couple :o 8 Black total (not broken down by sex), 1 kid. That's seems like a much better ratio :p

Well, you're assuming all of those kids' parents were alive...

if they *were* it wouls be 4/couple on average, but I don't thik that's how the actual distrubition went. I'm not how they would survive without someone taking care of them, though :o

Of course now I have this mental image of a band of wandering children traipsing around the island... :D

I don't know what that is, but it needs to be killed and skinned.

It might have something to do with the white population having recourse to better medical treatment. They would have more surviving children.

I think it is more likely that there is just a very negligible black population in the Bahamas at this point, and they weren't really in a position to be setting up families..... I'd not be surprised of like 7/8 of the black people were men.

As for better medical treatment..... medium. I mean, the Bahamas are generally a backwater and HI is on the margins of *that*. People are pretty poor overall. Probably why they can't afford more slaves :V Although they don't have any real plantations, either... Depending on who you bleieve, they are so lazy that they barely put effeor into growing enoughfood to feed themselves.

Friend of mine recently told me of his girlfriend's grandparents who had eighteen children. All single births.
