I was checking a reference chain for something in an article I am writing, and have fallen in fst love with the southeastern Moluccas.
Their social organization is based on conceiving of each household as a ship crew. The interior arrangement of the houses is spatially arranged like a ship, the houses are oriented as a ship sailing following the sun, and spaces are even named after ship spaces/crew positions. The houses even look like ships. And they have ship art! Family ship flags! Essentially, from what i can tell, they are pretty much the epitome and ideal example of my definition of a maritime community and then some @_@
And then the Ducth came and ruined everything ;p
I need a boat icon.
ETA: their ships have vaginas! Keel + garboard strakes = ship vagina. You know, ships are kind of vaginal in shape when viewed from above - why has this never occured to me before? Am I really dense?
ETA 2: why is this book $300 used? ;_;
