Cris feels like she is suffocating in her own skin as the end of high school approaches. Everyone seems to assume she is going to go on and study music, given her prodigious talent with the trumpet, but feels more distant from the music she's poured her soul into her whole life, just as she feels alienated from herself. What she feels she really needs is a rest. A chance for self-exploration might come on the trip to Jamaica her parents surprise her with as a graduation present, especially once she learns that the reefs sheltering the resort's private beach are hiding a centuries-old secret...

Candace Metzer has always been a looser, but she's comfortable with that. She's never had a boyfriend, or a girlfriend for that matter, even on the internet. Her jobs have been all been dead-end shift work for minimum wage or worse. She hasn't even got many friends other than her eight-year old tabby, Porridge.

It isn't that she isn't smart, or friendly, or any of those things. She's just felt her whole life that something Special was meant to happen to her, and so she's been coasting along until it did. Maybe it was delusional, but after she runs in to Francis Lake on an innocuous shopping trip in Richmond, she starts to wonder if maybe it's not....
