Candace Metzer has always been a looser, but she's comfortable with that. She's never had a boyfriend, or a girlfriend for that matter, even on the internet. Her jobs have been all been dead-end shift work for minimum wage or worse. She hasn't even got many friends other than her eight-year old tabby, Porridge.
It isn't that she isn't smart, or friendly, or any of those things. She's just felt her whole life that something Special was meant to happen to her, and so she's been coasting along until it did. Maybe it was delusional, but after she runs in to Francis Lake on an innocuous shopping trip in Richmond, she starts to wonder if maybe it's not....
