Well, I managed to dig up a few first lines from some of my favourite writings. A couple of these are short stories, though. I read a lot more of them than books, in general. I don't need to have as much time :/
Anyway, since there are only nine of these, I'm not going to bother with an LJ-cut. Not gonna be too surprised if they aren't incredibly recignizable, either. I coldn't find some that I wanted, and I didn't bother repeating some of the others that have been listed elsewhere.
Significantly lacking from this list are some works by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, though. And I keep feel that there are some other books I'm just completely overlooking as well. But, here goes...
"The deed is done, master." Lusk barely had a second to notice the glint of the long-knife, and only a fraction of that second to realize what it meant.
"Tom glanced behind him and saw the man coming out of the Green Cage, heading his way. Tom walked faster. There was no doubt the man was after him."
"Gummitch was a superkitten, as he knew very well, with an I.Q. of about 160."
"Tarissa whispered a hope out loud before looking up at the sky. "Please make it lighter than before. Please." As her lips came together, she looked up past the wind-twisted pines and the ridge of frost-riven granites, up towards the position of the sun. Only the sun wasn't there."
"Having taken more than ordinary pains in collecting the materials which compose the following History, we could not be satisfied with ourselves if anything were wanting to it which might render it entirely satisfactory to the Public."
"Though carefully educated in medecine and surgery, I have never practised either. The study of each contines, nevertheless, to interest me profoundly. Neither idleness nor caprice caused my secession from the honourable calling which I had just entered. The cause was a very trifling scratch inflicted by a dissecting knife. This trifle cost me the loss of two fingers, amputated promptly, and the more painful loss of my health, for I have never been quite well since, and have seldom been twelve months together in the same place."
"It began in the old and golden days of England, in a time when all the hedgerows were green and the roads dusty, when hawthorn and wild roses bloomed, when big-bellied landlords brewed rich October ale at a penny a pint for rakish high-booted cavaliers with jingling spurs and long rapiers, when squires at roast beef and belched and damned the Dutch over their claret while their faithful hounds slumbered on the rushes by the hearth..."
"At cold corner in midwinter, the women of the Snow Clan were waging a war against the men."
