Apparently, people get upset enough about being 'defriended' online that CNN wrote an article about it

Sadly, I am not convinced that it is a matter of "growing up." I think it's hard-wired into us because we are such a socially-inclined species.

I'm being a bit flippant, it is true, however, people who get all worked up because people they don't know unfriend them on facebook or LJ, or who are afraid to unfriend people they don't know (or.... don't even like o_O) for fear of hurting someone's feelings boggle my brain.

It's part of our biology. So there's some natural variation, and yeah, that means some people take it a lot worse than others.

I think that is kind of an excuse. Part of our biology is to fight for the best potential mate - but society has evolved to where its not ok for you to club me so you can sleep with my husband. Our social scopes have long grown past pack status and scope. The social world we have available is just to big. Since we are adapting creatures it just stands to reason that people who can be objective will stretch out of that - so in a way I do see it as growing up. Using logic and objectivity on a situations instead of sitting around crying "why don't they LIIIIIKKKKKKEEE MMMMMEEEEE" - which to be fair is a behavior most of us outgrow in highschool - is both an adult trait, and I think one could argue in part how human beings have risen above other behavior dictated by biology or tradition.

In summary, we do biologically "grow up", and as we do so we gain a greater ability to contextualize other people's actions. But you all should watch it anyway, because there is a cute test story about PIRATES.

I've been thinking about this kind of thing a lot lately. I don't know if its the word of the pregnancy spreading or if its just a coincidence, but all kinds of people who I am just acquaintances have been sending me add invites on facecrack. While its true that I am glad to reconnect with some of them - some of them baffle me. The girl who told me she was going to steal my bf in uni and who I had to fire from a job twice, and who blamed a friend for a rape he didn't commit - why does she think I want to be friends? Or hear from her? The people I barely knew in school who want to chat about stuff I don't care about and who I have nothing in common with, who I have removed from my friend's list more then once who always reinvite me like they are convinced it was a mistake. Like I'm socially obligated to share the details of my life with anyone who may be interested? Fuck that noise! I send a friend request, its ignored, I figure they aren't interested and forget about it, I don't cry or rant. Sure, I might if we were *actually friends*, but most people who pop up on facebook are just bored and looking to increase their hundreds of friends. So, in closing, if I barely knew people, or they were jerks to me, or they snubbed me ages ago, or I don't care about them in any way, then I feel justified in not letting them into my personal life. If they feel badly about it then they should work on having enough of a real life that they can just shrug it off.
