I'd be pissed too if my life was spent rowing for hours and hours and hours in the cramped quarters and shitty conditions of a galley. I'm not even sure whether the Greeks used slaves for their oarsmen or not, but even for a free person, I think it would suck.

A cursory familiarity with literature, poetry and history has given me the impression that the life of sailors everywhere and at every time has been a big ball of suck (more suck for some, less for others, but still overwhelmingly suck) with some, if any, minor beneficial tradeoffs.

I guess it beats mining.
