(Thanks [livejournal.com profile] chiv!)

Okay it is more like pre-news, but apparently they are announcing the new actor for The Doctor tomorrow.

The gender neutrality of the article is intriguing, but I suspect ultimately misleading.

In a brain-and-time-exploding twist, the new Doctor will be Rose.

hee!

You know it is possible I guess that he could regenerate to look like someone he knows or has known.

Actually, that would be sort of an interesting episode - if he coincidentally looked exactly like someone else. They could have fun with that!

Alex Kingston? They never did clear up how she knew the doctor in that library episode. Again, though.. female doctor = NO.

with many more books, radio plays, possible animated webisodes and four feature length episodes to go, it'll be covered somewhere.

It'll be interesting to see how the 11th doctor copes with it.

I don't really regard webisodes as 'canon' in the same way - I think issues raised in the series should be resolved in the series; after all much of their fanbase doesn't DO the internet in the same way.. I can't see, my dad, for example, trawling the net to find out who she is/was. And *I'm* a little unlikely to catch the radio plays. If you take my point.

They're usually released later as audiobooks, but yeah, the shows are really what counts here.

Which would, hopefully suggest that it'd be in one of the specials..

Me too, 'cos *I* reckon the theory put forward by everyone else on the matter is based on dodgy assumptions.

Unless I missed a bit, of course.

I could *swear* they specified that she was his wife but I'll have to go back and check the ep to be sure...

Well.. as I recall they had her diary and could have read it to find out who she was, but chose not to.

posted by [identity profile] autobuck.livejournal.com at 07:13pm on 02/01/2009
But what Chiv said. The diary they chose not to read was just details, he's already forced the big spoiler out of her.

Srsly?

DAMN, but I wish I could concentrate.

I haven't been able to concentrate properly since I fell pregnant. It's most annoying.

She knew his real name and there was only ever one situation where he'd tell someone.

posted by [identity profile] gnomentum.livejournal.com at 09:38pm on 02/01/2009
That doesn't mean she was his wife. There might have been other situations that he could have meant. Perhaps she was his daughter or something...

It wouldn't be te first time the Doctor has regenerated into someone who had a stong influence on his life.
The Doctors sixth incarnation strongly resembled a time Lord who put him on trial during his fourth or fifth incarnation.

Was it actually the same actor?

yup. Colin Baker.

Neat! I'd love to see a Master/Doctor... but as Lan suggested, maybe more as "an interesting episode" rather than a real continuitous story.

Continuitous should be a real word but it isn't.

Well now, if you want some Master/Doctor, there is plenty of it to be found on the internet, my friend :V

It's just not the same without that official stamp of approval.

I reckon they scored a real own goal using John Simm as the master, he'd make a fantastic doctor.. I'm not sure I'd be able to believe that kind of regeneration though, whatever the precedent.

Billie Piper as the Doctor.. big fat no in my book. She was fantastic as Rose but I dunno about the world as a whole - *I* am not ready for a female doctor. Unless we're talking in the gynaecological sense, in which case it would be preferable.

I'm crossing my fingers and hoping for Jack Davenport. He's always been bloody brilliant when Steve Moffatt's been written for him.

We could have the cushion rant all over again!

Hmmm. He wouldn't have quite the sense of humour I like in the Doctor; then again, they do seem to alternate funny doctors with more serious ones - maybe it could work. I don't dislike the idea of James Nesbitt as suggested in the article but as he's fvourite for it, that probably means it won't be him.

Oh god no, I was just joking when I said it'd be Billie Piper. It was amusing for about five minutes during that Doctor/Rose/Cassandra episode, but I was sick of her by the end!

I'd love to see more of John Simm too, but they wrote him out pretty solidly and I don't think I'd like the mental gymnastics required to make him work as The Doctor after all that.

Exactly this. He would've been BLOODY good, though.

As for Billie Piper - the article mentioned her, too.

Time Lords are stealing my bad ideas and inserting them into continuity.

Look out for blue police boxes stalking you!

I *do* look for them. If I ever come across a real police box, I will probably accidentally lock myself in.

Also, I'm baffled, do you have any more BG on this story? I thought it was 6th Doctor Colin Baker who was put on trial by his future-self (The Valeyard)...

posted by [identity profile] chiv.livejournal.com at 05:44pm on 02/01/2009
It was during the Arc of Infinity storyline; you're thinking of Trial of a Time Lord.

As for the reasons behind the Doctor looking similar to the other Time Lord; there's nothing in the canon (yet) although the six's resemblance to the other is mentioned in passing once or twice.
I'm really just suggesting possible canon excuses for the doctor resembling another major character and Moffatt re-using a popular actor/actress.

I think the human race in Doctor Who canon is based on repopulating earth with clones after some (probably Dalek- or Time-War-related) disaster. The limited genetic stock is why major players (like Martha/not-Martha, and Tosh+Gwen for Torchwood) appear as other people. Possibly these clones were seeded throughout time to replace individuals who were disappeared by Whatever Happened, to help prevent overlaps. (Although clearly Tosh and not-Tosh both exist in Cardiff in the same time period, both pairs of Martha/not-Martha, and Gwen/not-Gwen don't.)

posted by [identity profile] chiv.livejournal.com at 06:02pm on 02/01/2009
well, not-Gwen was supposedly Gwen's ancestor which came up in the most recent season finale.
There's some suggestion that not-Tosh who appeared in the Slytheen episode (with the mutated pig and the 9th doctor) was actually Tosh. I seem to remember she was never named although it doesn't explain why she was a xenologist instead of a techie.

But I want to know NOW! And I want new eps of Dr Who and Torchwood RIGHT NOW!

Well, I'd like the Torchwood on DVD since I don't appear to get it on broadcast at the moment....

AND while their at it, I'd like to see the rest of BSG now as well. I heard that the entire series has been done for like 6 months now and Sci-Fi is just holding onto it just to string us along for another season. Bastards!
