I am trying to at least start thnking about things a bit early 9not that halfway through November is really 'early' for Christmas shopping when you have to mail stuff...)

But I did this last year for family and I remember some of you thinking it was a good idea so... Is there anyone out there who I'm likely to be getting a gift for who would rather see me send some money to a charity in their name instead? Or hey, even if you're not someone who thinks they're on my gift list, really :x

Last year I gave to the Red Cross, the Canadian Cancer Society, and I think the NB MS Society. I'd like to add amnesty International to the list this year too, and possibly a decent seeming wildlife/environmental group. I'm open to suggestions on this point as well.

Thanks :)

Trade you Medecins sans frontieres for your Amnesty International!

It's like Pokemon!

But nobody can afford to donate to them all!

I'm not sure if I would be on your list or not, but I do not need gifts, tyvm! I already like your selection of charities. I'm not too familiar with wildlife funds, except I've always heard good things about the WWF. More research is needed before I'd recommend them.

I like to donate to charity around this time of year as well. The thing that always bugged me though, was that it's hard to tell which charities will put the money to good use. I really dislike those charities that send a bunch of stuff in the mail to try and guilt you into donating (ahem unicef!) like sending you a nickel "this nickel could save a child's life!" or a bunch of address labels. I feel like that's a reflection on how they're going to spend your donation money. Or Sierra club, which has called me repeatedly asking for *$100* and trying to pressure me to give, even after I told them to stop calling. I really dislike that tactic.

Vinnie actually has a cousin who has worked for non-profits and is pretty knowledgeable about which ones put their money to good use vs. pocketing it or using it to pester you for more donations. I recall her once saying that there are better environmental groups than Sierra Club, that unicef is terrible in terms of how much of the donations go to the CEO, and I think the American Red Cross keeps something like 80% of the donations meaning that 20% of your donation ends up going to aid. .( Vinnie and I were going to spend some time with her soon to do some research and figure out what charities we want to donate to this year, and if you're interested, I'd be happy to let you know what I learned.

That would be awesome, thanks :)

I donated to the Canadian Red Cross - I don't know how different they are than the Americans on that score though. In general if there is a Canadian version, though, I'm gonna give my money to them :x
