This is an area of much interest to me. I planned to coauthor a paper on it many moons ago and never got very far with it. The issue got considerable discussion in the U.S. within the cultural resources community over "traditional cultural properties (TCPs)." I think that the Brits are the primary references, though. The Australian aboriginal concepts of landforms, space, time, are well documented although their archaeology has never interested me much.

It seems like you might want to look at "seascapes" as well? Noone has really done that yet.
