In general, my day got better after I got home. I had a few low moments but stuff sorted itself out and i had a good time, even if my original plans fell through :)

So, got back from seeing the film - I like it! I especially liked the second ending with SLJ as Nick Fury. It made me all kinds of excited. Yes - *all* kinds!

However, did it seem to anyone else that someone else was siting around watching batman Begins and though "you know, this whole thing with the rich playboy going missing and the guy whose been running/helping run his company since his dad's time taking over and selling weapons to terrorists? You know who this plotline would be better for than batman? yeah, that's right, Tony Stark. So, lets do it! An Ironman movie. we'll just take that pot and make it bigger!"

Also, another thought. Ironman is not so popular/well-known a figure. Even people who have heard of him don't know much about him: "He, um... fights and fights with repulsor rays?" I wonder if in some ways that is a help, because people have less preconceived notions and also are more honestly curious to see what the story will be? Apologies to [livejournal.com profile] chiv and the few other Ironman diehards out there ;)

Hey I know about Iron Man. He's a cool exec with a heart of steel! Or something.

Amazing pinecones armor, that's Iron Man!

To be honest I'm not a huge fan of the regular Iron Man, rather the Heroes Reborn incarnation from the late 1990's and the new Ultimate Iron Man.
Still R.D.Jr was spot on with Stark. Who better than a rehabilitated, womanising, 'bad boy', alcoholic to play an rehabilitating womanising, 'bad boy', alcoholic?

I'm crossing my fingers for the casting of Thor and Cap to be just as impressive for their standalone movies and later the Ultimates Avengers movie.

R.D.Jr was *perfect*, yes, and good for him!

"Apologies to chiv and the few other Ironman diehards out there"
I wouldn't call myself an Iron Man diehard, but I know plenty about him from reading other marvel books. Eventually I borrowed a copy of the huge marvel original Iron Man collection and read up on him, but I didn't learn much more than I knew already.

I have no idea whether Batman or Iron Man came first, but I'm much more familiar with "the guy whose been running/helping run his company since his dad's time taking over and selling weapons to terrorists" from Iron Man than from Batman - it just seemed like a good way to fit Ra's Al Ghoul into Batman Begins to me.

I'm not saying it *doesn't* fit Tony Stark better, I'm just saying that the film had a very familiar pattern/plot to BB, and I haven't seen anyone else mention it :o

I agree that the plots are similar, and that it's an interesting thinking point. I was just responding to your proposed scenario in which someone rips off the Batman Begins plot for Iron Man, which I don't think is the real case, as the plot for the Iron Man film seemed to me to be straight out of the Iron Man books. It's one of the most faithful movie recreations I've seen ever.

I dunno - I think the success of BB and that plot probably contributed to the idea than IM was *viable* at least, as they knew it was a workable plotline. No, they didn't rip it off per sey, but I'm unwilling to dismiss the connection completely.

If there's a connection, then it's comic to comic rather than movie to movie.
