School mottos:

Fredericton High School: Palma Non Sine Pulvere: No success without work.
University of New Brunswick: Sapere Aude - Dare to be wise.
University of Sheffield: Rerum Cognoscere Causas - To discover the causes of things.
East Carolina University: Servire Latin - To serve (it was originally a teacher's college, for the record).
Texas A&M University: Does not have a coot Latin motto, but rather a kind of pain inducing 'tagline' of 'A Unique American Institution'

I think UNB still wins.

Dare to be wise?

What does that even mean?

I always took it to mean to challenge yourself to both think critically about your actions and pursue learning and wisdom

I agree that's the best interpretation, but I wonder if that's a very loose reading of "dare".

...Maybe not. I suppose critical thinking does require a lot of courage of a certain sort. Certainly unpleasant truths do!

King Solomon dared to be ( and was) wise - He "sought to discover the meaning of all things under heaven", so he would have identified with UNB or Sheffield as a young man....

-UnO WhO

but it was vanity, and vexation of the spirit!

Texas A&M would have a latin motto if they could just figure out how to translate "Yeehaw"!
