Meme! Comment and I will give you 3 interests on your list for you to explain about.
My six here are from
curtana and
wererogue. So....
From Wererogue:
Econoline Crush - a band! I saw them in concert back around 97 or 98 when they headed for The Tea Party. I have one of their albums, but had fortgotten about it until asked in this meme :V I don't even know if they *made* more than one album... Well, I guess they did! The one I have is Devil You Know. I stil enjoy it, too :) - sort of indy/alt rock maybe? I'm terrible at labeling things :p
William Snelgrave - An 18th century slave trader who was captured by pirates. He published an account of his captivity along with his book A New Account of Some parts of Guinea and the Slave trade in 1736. The pirates he encountered were La Bouse, Copcklyn, and my very favourite, Howell Davis. Apart from providing this little gem of a pirate account, Snelgrave also witnessed the formation of the country of Dahomey first hand, and much of his book talks about politics in Africa. He was considered something of an expert in African affairs, and I know that he was called before the Board of Trade to explain that situation - there are some other interesting little historical tidbits about him too. His comments on slavery and the slave trade are also quite an interesting glimpse into past attitudes...
Jack Off Jill - Another band! Sort of goth-punk. Angry, angsty. I enjoy a lot of their stuff although sometimes I feel like I'm a little old for it ;) The female lead has more recently formed a band called Scarling, and I think I like it better. Her voice has matured. Still, Much fun and and many good tracks. Also, My Cat!
From Curtana:
Charles Johnson - another eighteenth century historical figure, but this one is more mysteeeeerious! This is the name of the author of A General History of the Pirates. But no one knows who is was! In fact, some people maintain that it was a pseudonym for Daniel Defoe! Personally, I don't believe that is 100% true, especially since all the bits of the General History that really bear Defoe's marks are all in the expanded second edition. My personal theory is that Defoe got involved in the publication of this (much expanded) edition, possibly as the editor. most pirate scholars accept the Defoe thing because that's the name on many modern editions, but Defoe scholars are less convinced.
Pirate Movies - This should really be pretty self-explanatory! I like movies about pirate . I own a ton of them, mostly a lot of *old* ones of dubious quality. However I have to admit I haven't had the chance to watch a lot of the classics with Erol Flynn and such, and I'd really like to rectify that!
The Faint - Yes, another band! I was introduced to them through
balthcat, who claims he hates all rock music. He'll probably rail at me for saying that they are like electronic rock ;) I keep thinking they are British, but they are not! They have free downloads on their site, so check them out for sure!
In non-meme news, I started inking my ship today. I thought i had royally fucked up my drawing, but this was not the case. I just can't count! :V Or at least not in multiples of three. I also started writing that paper yesterday, so my productivity continues. I also saw people and socialized a bit today, so i am less cranky. I was Meghan at the gym, and also gathered a posse at school to go out for lunch. Yay potatos! I also watched Dr. Who with Claire. "57 academics are punching the air right now."
I am going to go back to the good old Calendar of State Papers, Colonial Series now, whee!

Adoptionism, Arianism, and Sedevacantists. Go :D
(no subject)
Adoptionism is the belief that Jesus was fully human until he was baptized by John the Baptist and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove came down and adopt Jesus, giving him hid divinity.
Arianism: Arius believed in the inequality of the Trinity whereas his opponent Anathius believed in the currently orthodox position, that God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all the same and are co-equal. Arius was exiled from the Roman empire, and went and converted most of the Germanic tribes. Both ealry atheists and unitarians where often referred to as Arians, even though their beliefs were not those of Arius or his followers.
Sedevacantists: These are schismatic Catholics that believe that there is current not a pope, and therefore the throne of Rome is empty (therefor sede vacantist). They do not believe in the Second Vatican Council, and many follow the Tridentine Mass instead of the Novo Ordus Mass, or the current Mass. Some have elected their own popes, and others believe that there will not be another pope until Christ comes.
Err... how was that?

Hikaru Utada, Moose drill, and cookies ^-^
I mean, I know about cookies, but I'd like to hear *more* about them, you know? ;D
Speaking of, have you seen
(no subject)
Hikaru Utada: Is probably most popular for her song in Kingdom hearts (Simple and Clean?) She gained success in America before actually trying to make it big in Japan. However now that she is in Japan, she is still pretty huge. All my students and most of my teachers know of her. I like a lot of her songs, some are pure J-pop, and others have a mix of J-pop and regular pop.
Moose Drill: On one fatefull weekend last year. The weekend of Bronwen's fashion show I
snuck down to Saint Johnborrowed my parents car to get laina. Moose are a big life threatening problem on the highway between Fredericton and Saint John. Instead of builing a fence along the highway which would help tremendously but would be very costly we came up with an alternate solution. Attatch a special moose drill to the front of you car that so powerful that if you fun into a moose you wil just drill a pathway through it and the day will be save (for you, not the moose)Cookies: What can I say. Somehow I found a passion for making cookies. On one fine retrospective day I concluded that I love making cookies becuase one of my grandmothers taught me how to make cookies when I was little like 6 or 7 shortly before she passed away. I enjoy cooking, and I think that I use cookies as a way of keeping her a part of me. Plus who doesn't like cookies!? Seriously!?

Punching Dean's Crotch! :V Rumi, and Dr. Zoidberg :D
(no subject)
Rumi = An Islamic mystic and poet. He is almost certainly the most famous Sufi. I find his poetry interesting and sometimes erotic. His example of a personal relationship with Allah is almost the antithesis of Islamic philosophy that most Westerners are familiar with.
Dr. Zoidberg = There is just something very loveable and comical about this character from Futurama. I especially like it when he skuttles away making a "whoop, whoop, whoop, whoop" sound.

Greasy breakfasts, neurosis, and.... meat :D Yum!
(no subject)
Its a Sunday morning, the night before featured beer and dubious rock music, and there's only one solution to a hangover of this magnitude - a proper greasy spoon fried breakfast - bacon, sausage, liver, eggs, mushrooms, beans, tomato, fried potato and hash brown - whats not to like :P Even theaccompanying mugs of tea should have a slight film of grease, and remember you can always tell a proper cafe by the size of their lard fridge :) [It was also an occasional weekend ritual where i got to hang out with friends and chat about nothing much, which was nice and I miss doing stuff like that]
Neurosis:
The band [not my head, honest ;p]. First heard them through the "A Sun That Never Sets" Album. A good, slow, atmospheric, "doomy" sound. Been meaning to get more of there stuff for a while(http://www.neurosis.com/index.html)
Meat:
I am not overly persuaded by vegitarianism. Not to decry other people there choices but I like a good steak. Lamb is always good too, and i've been eating a certain amount of goose recently. Thats it really :)

So I'll go with.... Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia, profane tmesis, and sesquipedality!
(no subject)
Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia
Annoying genetic disorder from my mother's side of family. Certain parts of the body don't form enough capillaries, putting the ones that are there under too much pressure. Hence, nosebleeds, bleeding from the gut wall, or various other things. So far the only major symptom for me is nosebleeds, but apparently other parts of the body might start more as I get older.
Profane tmesis
Tmesis is the insertion of one word into another; profane tmesis is doing it with swearing. Abso-bloody-lutely. Fan-fucking-tastic.
Sesquipedality
Literally, the quality of being a foot and a half long. In a figurative sense, being cumbersome, impractical or unwieldy. There's something to like about a word that means "cumbersome or unwieldy" that is longer, less snappy and more unwieldy than any other word that could be used in its place.
