So, I got an e-mail back from the editor of Dark Wisdom today. He likes my story. However, he has asked if, rather than submit it to the magazine, I might consider instead submitting it for an anthology that he is editing calledHigh Seas Cthulhu. The book pays (only) twice yearly royalties. The magazine pays 250$ upfront.

I am tempted to go for the book, but I have no idea about any of this publishing stuff, and I don't know how much it would even be - like 20$ twice a year or something?

Any advice? 250$ right now would be nice, but a: I don't think it would be 'right now' and b: it isn't going to make or break me.

However the fact that I just spent 70$ on fabric and patterns because the Hancocks fabrics here is having a going out of business store - that was probably not my best move :o

yay!!!

i´m gonna have to say book. cause even if money´s fine and dandy, book=way more cred. and you could always ask him about the payment, cause let´s face it, nothing´s for free these days and surely he must know that ;)

Yeha, he said it was basically a matter of 1 large lump sum versus semi annual little sums, so it certainly wouldn't be free - I just don't know when I would actually be able to expect to see the money... I know the anthology is supposed to come out this year.

That is veryvery awesome! Go with the book, because you know all your friends are going to run out and buy copies, so you're sure to get some royalties. ;D

But yeah, ask how much you'd get for every book sold, and whether he's done anthologies before, or whether he has any idea how much other Cthulhu anthologies have brought in before finalizing your decision, maybe.

Congrats! I'd ask the editor how much he expects the royalties would come to per year, so you have a better idea of what to expect.

PS - you should mention to him that you have another ocean-related Cthulhu story you could submit, and then hurry to finish it up ;)

Thanks! I am planning to e-mail him with a bunch of questions today, so that will be on the list :)

Also, I have too much other crap I need to do for school - I'm not sure when I could make enough time to finish the Cursed Wreck. Also it is more *under* the seas anyway, isn't it? ;)

Just ask him what he estimated the book royalties to be. If he's shifty and won't give you ANY numbers, then I'd go for the mag. Lots of times you wont get royalties until they recoup their costs on the title, which for 90% of books will be never (they are made up for by other titles under the label)

Thanks dude. I know this press makes at least *some* money, or they wouldn't be able to pay so well for they magazine, at least...

Does he say you wont publish in the mag. , orjust that you might consider the anthology as an option...is this "either/or" or jusr "or"?

What are his projected anthology sales...an annual percentage of nowt is still just that.

It is an either/or thing. I think it is a matter of timing, because the magazine is only semi annual and the anthology is supposed to come out this year as well.

I will ask about projected sales though :)

Why couldn't your story be published in both? Many stories in anthologies have already been published elsewhere, after all.

That is a good question. I suspect that it is a matter of timing. I know that the magazine only buys first publication rights. The anthology is also coming out this year (I believe), so there is probably a conflict. I will ask though, thanks!

I asked, and what he said was that it was because both publications target the exact same market, and it is a niche genre...
