I need a paper topic in two weeks. I am thinking of writing on the ship as a constructed space, and examining how a structure like a ship, where the primary purpose is fucntional (as a transportation tool), can encode cultural meaning in other ways. A ship is *not* just a tool for transportation: it can symbolize all sorts of things, for instance national ideals and identities. I am certainly more interested in 'new world' developments... New world in the sense of a timeline - post-medieval, as it is used here at A&M

I should look at Joe Flatman's work with ships as symbols. I ought to look at some other archaeological branches as well, maybe landscape, just for looking into how constructed spaces reflect or construct world views. So go back through my landscape bits, then. Any other suggestion? I know that other people have been looking at constructed space in archaeology but the only name that comes to mind is Roberta Gilchrist(sp) who did some work on medieval monasteries D: I am going to look through Matthew Johnson, i think he has some good bits in his Archaeological Theory, but maybe it is just references to Leone (gag).

This requires more thought. I'd kind of like to get pirates in there too - if I do wind up looking at a pirate land site for my dissertation, it would be good to have something written about how they conceived of spacial social relations on ships, perhaps?
