I have been interviewed by [livejournal.com profile] fearsclave, and since I've been sitting on these questions for a few days now, in theory I should be able to provide thoughtful coherent answers! We'll see how that goes ;)

1) Why pirates?
Oh, lots of reasons! I think they are interesting because they are still such a popular cultural image. I find the difference between what they were to the people of their time and the people of today is interesting. I am interested in maritime people, and in outcast groups, and pirates are a good combination of these things :) I like the eighteenth century, and I think that the so called 'golden age' of piracy (~1680-1730) is a really interesting time in world politics, and these politics had a lot to do with how piracy was carried out, and where, and why, and why pirates were eventually hunted down. It is interesting to see how much economics and politics really influenced one small group of people so strongly. some of the individual personalities intertwined in the history of piracy are also very interesting, and not just the pirates themselves. The stories involving pirates are likewise fascinating. Also - it is just fun, okay? ;)

2) Why the Technocracy?
Ahh, the technocracy... Mage was my first really gaming love. It was the first gaming book I bought myself, and I could never find anyone to play with. Mage was actually the first game I ever *ran* for that matter, which I still think was rather brave of me ;) But the first time I actually got to *play* Mage, it was at a gaming convention. A bunch of my friends set up a game called the pentad - there were single sessions of each of the 5 main WoD games involved in investigating different aspects of the same plot, and then a huuuge session that involved the surviving players from those sessions. I signed up to play in the Mage one, and The GM ran it as a technocracy unit. I got to play the geeky VE guy, Galen Cox, with a crush on the Amalgam leader, Rhianne Masterson, played by my friend [livejournal.com profile] vess. I still have their character sheets ;) I think that had a big influence on my technocratic love.

Otherwise, I think it is also that I like the idea of the Union being filled with people who start out thinking that they are really doing the right thing, who just get caught up in the power struggles and corruption, or who come to accept that the theoretically admirable end of protecting normal people from threats that they can't withstand comes to justify the most extreme of means... I guess I like it because it isn't just straight up evil organization - there are just so many grey areas with them which results in the potential for a lot of really cool stories.

3) What would you do were you able to take a year off and do whatever you wanted?
Travel. Especially if I could take people with me. I need to see and experience more of the world. I'd love to go to places in Eastern Europe, and the near/ middle East, let alone all the parts of Canada I haven't yet been to. And Madagascar, and and and... Yes. I'd travel. :)

4) What does your default user icon represent?
It is the Sumerian cuneiform for Goddess. I have it tattooed on the back of my neck. It is also part of my signature. Yes, I am that awesome - bow before me and shower me with gifts of chocolate and shiny things! More seriously, I'm not sure I can explain why I feel so connected to it. I'm not particularly religious or spiritual, and I don't have any specific affinity or even belief for any actual specific goddess, or even really the Sumerians.

5) What do you plan on doing over the next year?
Oh if I only knew. I think this summer will be split between visiting/working (I hope-_-) in NB and Ontatio/Toronto. In the fall I'll be settling in to a PhD program in either Texas or London, and which program it is will really determine how my studies go. So, I plan to do more school, in some form. Otherwise, I plan to go on doing the things I'm already doing - writing, dancing, gaming. Oh, and I want to get a dog :o

Satisfied? If anyone would like to be interviewed by me, leave a comment and I'll see what I can come up with :)

I am tempted to ask, but my answers to personal questions are always very shitty, so I know it's a bad idea!

1. What is the most rewarding thing so far about your move to Ottawa?

Definitely my job, but that probably doesn't count, since it's the reason I came here. But it's the best job I've ever had.

I would say, the most rewarding thing is being close enough to friends in eastern N. America that I can visit them without too much difficulty. Second, just being able to see new parts of the continent has been great. Third, living and working within visual sight of Parliament is still a little awe inspiring.

2. What is your favourite kind of pie?

Pumpkin, heavy on the spice, with whipped cream!

3. Why do you make so many characters for stuff?

It's just about my most favourite part of roleplaying. I like creating concepts, people, backgrounds, worlds... I enjoy creating more than I enjoy actually playing with what I've created. :P I'm one of those people who spends five hours in the character creation screen of an RPG game before I actually play the game. I guess you could call it hobby.

4. What is the sexyist thing Amanda currently owns? ^-^

She owns so much stuff and can throw it into so many combinations that I honestly don't know about everything, or possibly even half of everything. But from what I've seen... it's pretty hard to choose. You said "thing", so I won't count whole outfits, which makes it easier. Probably one of her black PVC pencil skirts with lacing up the backside. Goddamn, pencil skirts are hot, and the lacing just makes it better.

I could also choose her O-ring choker, or any one of many verrry nice corsets... she has an awesome black PVC one with little spikes around the lower ribline.

5. If you could travel into outerspace, but were never allowed to return to earth, and you knew you'd never get another chance to go into space again, would you go?

Julie asked me almost the same question, with respect to Mars. Yes, without hesitation, I would go.

1. Apart from Ian and other peeps, what do you miss most about the UK?
2. If you could go back in time and tell your youngerself that we are the best of friends now, how do you think she would react? ;)
3. Why do you hate Raphaelite pantings?
4. If you could have a story published about any character you have played, who would you pick and what would they be doing?
5. When I come up to Toronto, will you bake me a pie? :D

I'm not posting this in my journal because I can't be arsed to interview anyone myself...

1. Well, I miss Aberystwyth. I miss living across the street from the ocean and hearing it while I fall asleep. I miss the land; the big green hills, and the fresh air, and the complete absence of allergies. Also pie shops.

2. I am pretty sure she would think I was lying.

3. Because they are pointless fluff.

4. This is pretty difficult because most of my characters are probably only interesting to me, and I wouldn't want a story about one of my peeps to be published only to fail spectacularly! :/ Maybe this isn't exacty a story, but I think the Perry Cole Songbook (with guitar tabs) would be pretty awesome.

5. Durrrh.

1. What is your favourite story, in any medium?
2. If you couold get a story published about any character you have created, who would you pick?
3. What's the furthest you've ever travelled and what did you do/where did you go?
4. What is your favourite kind of pie?
5. Being a computery type, I'm sure you have some sort of crazy caffeine concoction of choice - what is it you reach for when you're doing your best Klingon imitation?

1. What is your favourite story, in any medium?

So Long and Thanks for All the Fish, by Douglas Adams. Other things that popped into my head were the Belgariad/Mallorean series by David Eddings, Xenogears, The Matrix, and of course Final Fantasy 8. I've played/read/watched all of these things multiple times, and sometimes I wish I could erase my memory of them so I could experience them over. :)

2. If you couold get a story published about any character you have created, who would you pick?

This one made me think a bit... Most of my writing has been confined to fanfiction of various types. Goddess in the Mirror, which is what I compare all of my other stuff to, takes place in a borrowed universe and doesn't even really include any major new characters. Even when the characters are original, the universes generally arent. Hence, I think Lendrick and Sithra win by default, because they're the only ones that are viable from a publishing standpoint. They're also my current favorite. :)

3. What's the furthest you've ever travelled and what did you do/where did you go?

This isn't the best question for me, actually. I don't think I've ever been further from home than England, and that was on my honeymoon last year. Daria and I toured London, we saw some plays, drank beer, etc.

4. What is your favourite kind of pie?

Daria makes this apple pie that's just really yummy and gooey. Other pies just don't compare. :)

5. Being a computery type, I'm sure you have some sort of crazy caffeine concoction of choice - what is it you reach for when you're doing your best Klingon imitation?

Pepsi One or Coke Zero. Both are sugar-free and more caffeinated than their sugared counterparts. When I want somewhat less caffeine, I like an Arnold Palmer, which is half iced tea and half lemonade.

Innnteresting. Of course you are suopposed to pst this in your journal so that people can force you to reciprocally interview you ;D

1. What is your favourite kind of pie?
2. What kind of underpants are you wearing, or were you wearing most recently? ;)
3. What are your favourite kinds of dreams? Sexy ones? Adventure ones? Sexy adventure ones? They have to be a kind of dream that you have actually had though.
4. If talking to someone in person is not an option, what is your *next* prefered method of communication?
5. Name three movies would you like to own, but don't currently have.

1: Pumkin pie. But I also really like the squash pies you girls have made in the past.
2: Simple gren/black plaid boxers. I only own boxers and boxer briefs now, no tighties.
3: I like the sexy ones a lot. But as a strange asside, I never dream of doing something I have never actually done. I can dream I'm about to do something I've never done, but I always wake up before the actual act. As another strange fact, I can never hit anyone or anything with guns in my dreams. Often guns malfunction or don't have bullets, or only blanks. Sometimes the triggers are too hard to pull, so I always end up just beating my opponents with the guns until I can find a sword or axe or something.
4: Phone, preferably a video phone type thing. I am still unhappy with my ability to comunicate in written mediums. I find there are still times when I upset someone because of something I write, and think to myself, "If they had heard me say that, it wouldn't have been a problem."
5: The Aritocrats, Sin City, V for Vendetta. But really, I still don't really want to own movies. I don't have room for them, and almost never watch movies at my own house. The only real reason I want to own movies is so I can lend them out to other people to watch. (Thats the whole reason I purchased the Firefly DVD's.)

Good questions!
