I made stew. It is kind of an experimental stew, but I think it is pretty damned delicious! I'd originally bough stuff to put in stew last week, but I never got around to making it until now, and so I had used up some of the ingredients. Therefore I didn't really have as many taters as I would have liked, or any green beans. I also didn't have the half onion that I thought I did. So what *did* you put in this myserious delicious stew, you ask?
I started with some crappy steaks, because that was the beef that I had on hand. I browned it in olive oil with some oregano, black pepper, and garlic cloves. Next, I added a can of beef broth, because I always have to add stock or boullion anyway, and I had it right there, and some water. I added carrots (4) and potatos (2) at this point. I was also doing dishes at the time, so I could let things cook a way before I added more veggies. Next was parsnips, and another big garlic clove. Mmmm, nips! I'd been planning to add a tomato, but it was all moldy and gross, so instead I added the last little bit of a jar of salsa. I was hoping for a slightly tomato-y flavour in the broth, but there wasn't a whole lot else I could add. I let that all cook, and later came back to add cabbage and celery (mostly thickening stuff), and Mad Crazyness, in the form of the following spices: cayenne pepper, mustard, salt, and cinnamon. And because I really wanted the tomato, a little bit of ketchup.
Now this may all sound a little strange, but trust me. Although it smelled very cinnamon-y for a while, it doesn't stand out as a flavour - it just adds a little depth and sweetness to the veg and meat, which is offset nicely by the spicyness (not burningly hot, but noticeably spicy). Anyway, it's good, but I do miss the onion :/
