Okay, so I understand the basics of installing my DVD drive, and I have both the instructions that came with it, and the instructions for installing new stuff into mycomputer. however, I'm confused because there comes a point where both basically say "And then plug stuff into where it goes". I knid of gave clue what's going on. I know I have thew power hooked up properly, but my computer doesn't know I've added anything new, so I don't know that I've got the IDE interface connected properly. My drive came with a cable for it, and it would be deliciously simple if I could just plug one end into my computer and one end into my drive, and be done with it. however, there isn't a place to plug it in on my computer.... they're all; take. So, I figure I have to 'enslave' it to the CD drive that I already have. Is that right? Right now the cable rom that drive goes tothe new drive, and then to the motherboard. It is workign fine, but there is no new DVD drive for heather! I *think* I have thejumper setting set right... I have it set on 'slave'. Is that right? My other options are 'master' or 'cable select'.
So, if that makes any sense to you.... what am I doing wrong? :o I tried lookign for new hardware to install, but came up with nothing, and the only software that came with my drive was powerDVD, which I assume is not goign to help me install the drive :p
EDIT: when I say my cd drive was working, I apparently was wrong. it isn't playing burned CDs properly 9ones it has played before without issue, as well as exciting new ones, grrr...). It seems to play regular music CDs fine, though. Oh wait, now it isn't being recognized at all... -_-
Edit: I win at installing Hardware :)

Suggestions
You do not need software of any kind to utilize a CD or DVD drive as-is, they are recognized automatically by all OSs nowadays. Software is only needed for DVD playback(ala PowerDVD) and burning stuff to disk.
Alternately, you can also plug the DVD-ROM into the ide cable for the hard drive. And make sure everything is firmly seated(while the power is off, of course), it's easy to get the ide cables and power cords slightly out of whack while you're fiddling with the connections.

halfway clever will only get you so far -_-

Actually, I can't laugh. I've done it too. Usually I don't realize this till after I've cussed and screamed for thirty minutes.
(no subject)
I put mine in just last week. :D
