This is from Macha who is cool and has really good taste. Everyone else there who has seen the film sems to support her review, so I will let it stand as is... And wish I could go see this sooner!
Just got back from a sneak preview.
Oh. My. God.
This is the Batman movie I've been waiting for my whole life, the one I could only dream they would make. It was so incredibly good that watching the end credits roll I was filled with the sort of euphoria I can only describe as post-coital. SO GOOD.
But I'm a real hard core Batman geek. Your mileage may vary.
I will say that Katie Holmes was the weak link of the cast, but not so obnoxious I felt the need to smack her or wonder what Bruce Wayne sees in her (Yes, Vicky, I AM talking about you, you damn Lois Lane wannabe.) Hers was the least obtrusive of all the Batman movie romances so far, so cheers to that. All the rest of the cast put in astonishly good performances. Gary Oldman, who I was seriously worried about, was so good as a young Jim Gorden that after a while I completely forgot that Gary Oldman was playing the part. Likewise, this was the first Pennyworth (played by Michael Caine) where I could believe he'd been an ass-kicking English special forces op in his youth. It was nice to see Alfred with a little fire in his veins. Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox? Perfect, but then I did expect that.
And...
Ras Al Ghul is a god. I was SO scared they'd mess up that storyline, but no...he's every bit as scary/smart/dangerous/sexy as ever protrayed in the comics, and wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Did I mention sexy?
This movie was just geek bliss (never mind that it almost made me cry, something no Batman movie made before it even came close to doing.) Yes, yes, there was stuff blowing up real good, but themes in this movie -- of fear and facing that fear, of sacrifice, strength, what is charity and what is weakness? Is it morally right to kill evil? Who decides? God, no Batman movie's even really bothered to touch on that before, and Christian Bale pulled it off with such incredible acting chops...just incredible.
Yay!
Oh, and happy birthday CV, should you see this. I hope you are enjoying your marital bliss :)
