The book that is, though I expect I only have about a half hour or so of fiddling to make my presentation acceptable. I;ve even figured out how I am going to work things, and realiazed I need to re-work my introduction a little bit, too...
As for the book, well... I think I really would have liked to be able to re-read the first book (A Cavern of Black Ice) before I got into this one.... Just to remember all the little details. And I'll just reinforce that J.V.Jones is a master of characterization... And I'll give her more props too, for somethign else, the way she organizes her stories... The series has a main hero, possibly two. Boy and Girl, not too unexpected... Boy finds girl, boy loses girl, for all of the second book, and is none to pleased about it. And boy goes and does what it is that he seems to have been designed for.... kind of. There are hints of things, and it is clear that what he has accomplished at the end of this isn't the end of everything. he gets to deal with the big things in a very hands on manner. The Girl, well, she's pretty big in her own way, and not afraid to get her hands dirty (anymore ;D) but is still Hero-in-training material. It's like... Terra and Locke, or something like that, from ff6. (Did I ever mention that JVJ is a huge videogame fan too? ;D). So Boy accomplished something big in this book, enough to mean that its story is complete. But meanwhile.... there are a whole host of other things going on in the background, and it isn't at all clear how they are all gong to come together, wars, feuds, scheming, rescuing of ex-evil sorcerors... killing of of seemingly important characters, kidnappings.... All these are only tied in the vaguest way to what Boy and Girl are doing, yet you know, somehow, it will all fall together. In the next book. Which probably won't be out for another five years or so.... *sigh*
I'm going to go finish my presentation. Miao...
