1. Why pirates, anyhow?
I don't really remember how it started. I think I did a few essays on privateerin and piracy in my undergrad, and it just kind of went from there. I think they are an interesting marginal group, and I think that there is still a lot of *new* things to learn about that that people haven't really looked into much. The General History is a great book, but it really focused most pirate scholarship, even up until about 30 years ago, on the big names. Most of the history we have comes directly from it still.
2. If you didn't have internet access, what would you do with your time?
Well, in my experience, it depens on *why* I didn't have it. If I thought I should have it (like, if it is a technical or service issue), then I 'd get really annoyed and mostly focus on trying to get it back.
If I am in a situation, like when I was in the field, where it really just isn't feasible to have it, I don't generally think about it. When I wasn't hanging out with people, I was reading, writing, watching tv... All kinds of things. I'd just probably spend more time focusing on my other hobbies, really.
3. What's the dorkiest thing you've ever done?
How do you quantify 'dorkiness'? I've been shopping in my NERO costume, as well as out to restaurants, partly for the fun of 'freaking the mundanes'. I've written porn based on roleplaying games. I wrote a filk about archaeology. I talk to inanimate objects. I walked for an hour though a raging snowstorm and almost hip-deep snow to play DC Heroes. I decorated my house with pirate paraphanelia... I've written essays on the magic systems of imaginary worlds. Take your pick, really ^-^
4. What got you into dancing?
Well, pretty much, you did, of course! ;p It really seemed like fun (and it is!), I liked a lot of the moves, and the costumes.
5. Granny panties or thongs?
You know, if I had to choose one or the other for the rest of my life, I have to admit that I'd go with the granny panties. I have just never been able to get into the thong thing. As far as looks go, really, if you don't think they are very sexy, I can always take them off, and then, who is going to complain, in that situation? ;)
