elanya: Sumerian cuneiform 'Dingir' meaning divine being/sky/heaven (Arr!)
elanya ([personal profile] elanya) wrote2004-10-06 05:04 pm

I *am* 26 now, right?

I have this terrible problem where I can never remember how old I am. I think it will be more convenient when I am older, and can honestly be confused at never aging beyond 29 ;) Well, not that I plan on doing it, but knowing me I'm sure it will anyway :)

I *am* twenty-six, though, really. That's how the math works out :) Thanks to everyone who has sent me Things, including wishes :)

I went out to lunch with a couple of the girls - Dina and Michelle - from my program. Because of the time of year and various other factors, not a lot of people could make it. After lunch (which was mostly nice as a social event, the food was uninspiring), we went back to Eller house and hooked up with Katie (also in my program. She missed lunch tutouring stupid basketball players) . We collapsed on the couch in the conference room, chatting and watching the second years work on their site plans from the fieldschool. At some point in there I went to the bathroom and discovewred that the bees were giving me a little birthday gift of their own, hooray! I eventually sauntered home and collapsed into a nap. Bees make me sleepy. Now, I am just waking up, and I am going to answer some interview meme questions form [livejournal.com profile] curtana before I do any work. Yay procrastination!

1. What movie and/or song would you be embarassed (even just a little) to admit you really like?
It really depends on my mood and company, to be honest. Sometimes I don't like explaining why I like anime or talking about it with people who don't know about it. Sometimes I don't want to tell people that I love folk music. Or about the Big Bukkake Mountain. Which I'm actually *proud* of, generally ;) I can't think of any specific examples at the moment, though, and I promise that i'm not just saying that to avoid answering ^-^ Part of the problem with movies is that I really don't own any to speak of, so nothing comes to mind.

2. Honestly now, do you sometimes get sick of people 'arr'ing at you and giving you gifts with skulls and crossbones on them? ;)
Arring has yer to bother me, unless people are doing it to mock me, which happens very rarely. As far as pirate *things* go, I've been really lucky, so far, I guess :) There is a lot of pirate crap out there, but the things people get me are generally neat. Like books. Even if it is a crappy book, it still fleshes out my pirate library. Apart from books, people have gotten me flags, and a kite, clothes, a lunch box, some play-mobite, and some other silly toys. I have a parrot hand puppet. I *don't* have any tacky pirate figurines or anything, though. On the other hand... most of the pirate stuff available here in Greenville appeals very little. I think it is because its all associated with the football team, and partly because , well, it is all so terribly *common*. Or commpnplace, at least. I like to be a little more exotic. So, as I've said, I've been lucky. The people who buy me things generally have taste, too, which helps ;)

Oh, yes, my friend [personal profile] astatine210 made me this lovely icon ^-^

3. What's your current favourite item of clothing? And what's the item of clothing you most regret losing or ruining in some way?
That's a toss-up, realy. I will go with the three-tiered skirt I made, with the red and gold silk jacket Hazel got me at Cultures next. I'm pretty attached to both sets of my wrap pants, too., and other bits. Also, my new bras all deserve mention, especially the blue and brown mesh one.
As for ruining... I had a purple and gold silk dress made of sari fabric from Cultures that wore thin and ripped. I'm hoping to recycle if into a shorter dress, or top, or something else. My blue and silver silk jacket that Hazel got me, also from Cultures is starting to pull apart along some of the seams. The fabric itself is pulling apart, because of the way it was woven and the stress it receives at that point. These things make me sad. The lesson is that indian silk is gorgeous but not very durable, especially if you are like me and insist that there is no distinction between 'fancy' and 'every-day' dress. I also have a black dress and a pair of loose dark green india cotton pants that have bleach spots on them, but I wear them anyway.

4. As a fellow member of the more-than-generously-endowed sisterhood, would you ever consider having a boob reduction or boob lift?
No, not really. They are not so large that they give me any trouble, and I think that if they were smaller, I would be out of proportion. I have quite wide hips, and kind of a big butt ;) As for a boob lift, well, I know that gravity is inevitable, but I know that having strong pecs helps, and also good bras, and I'm doing well in both those departments so far.

5. What do you think is the most important lesson you learned from your mother?
I don't know, I learned a lot of important things, I do't know if I coulds pick just one. Maybe how to be patient with people, or that it is okay to like being on your own.

I will play too :)

1. Leave a comment saying you want to be interviewed.
2. I'll reply and give you five questions to answer.
3. You'll update your LJ with the five questions answered.
4. You'll include this explanation.
5. You ask other people five questions when they want to be interviewed.

See, I know I'm somewhere between 23 and 27, but I can't always remember where. It seems less and less important to be exact about it as time goes on.

[identity profile] elanya.livejournal.com 2004-10-06 05:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you askin'/knockin'? 'cause here are some questions ^-^

1. What is your favourite part of the Bible?
2. What is most important to you about religion or spirituality?
3. Have you ever met a girl that you seriously wanted to date?
4. What is your favourite silly thing to do?
5. What is your favourite place?

[identity profile] rumor-esq.livejournal.com 2004-10-06 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I will graciously allow you to ask me questions.

[identity profile] elanya.livejournal.com 2004-10-06 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
How kind ^-^

1. When I first met you online, you were extremely secretive about your real life. I would say you are less so now... Do you agree? If yes, why has this changed? If not, why not?
2. What is your favourite holiday?
3. What is the most important life leson you have learned?
4. What do you consider the most important thing that you have learned from your academic career to date?
5. How do *you* hope to Make a Difference?

[identity profile] rumor-esq.livejournal.com 2004-10-06 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
1. I'm secretive in general, it's just easier to be so online. I have definitely become less secretive over time, partly out of necessity, partly just because I have mellowed in my life. I've known you online since 95-96, after all. :) That's lots of time to change.

2. Hm. Christmas, I guess, because it's the only holiday that I (until this year) can guarantee I'll spend some time with my family, complete with huge meals and presents.

3. Geez. I don't fucking know! :o There's many realizations to choose from, you know. I suppose it would be the understanding that this life is what I get, and the best life to have is a happy one. Being happy means (a) understanding, admitting, and satisfying one's own desires and beliefs, and just as importantly, (b) helping those around you to be happy as well. Our ability to be happy in this world depends on all of what people before us have done and built, and what people around us do everyday. So we need to make the same contributions to the world around us to ensure happiness in our own lives, and as a sort of karmic payment.

4. I wish I could be an academic my whole life, but I don't have discipline to make myself do enough work. Although if you *don't* mean to ask about what I've learned about my academic career, then I've learned the essential value of critical, rational thought. Which is a learned and practiced skill.

5. I don't really know yet. I want to make a difference in a broad way. I'm not so well suited at helping people on the individual level as I am at being concerned about and tackling larger, comprehensive issues. So I hope to effect changes to larger systems in my career, even if those changes are small so long as they're significant. The lawyerly profession is directed at assisting people on the individual level, so this is hard, but not impossible, to do in my line of work. But then, I may not always be a lawyer.

Happy Birthday!

I find that I have the same problem with my age. I keep thinking I'll be turning 27 next week, but in reality I'm also turning 26.

Ehh, close enough, right? ^_~

[identity profile] elanya.livejournal.com 2004-10-06 06:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks :)

And yeah, close enough. 'Mid twenties' will cover us for a few years ^-^

I'm always amazed at how many people I know were born in October :o

[identity profile] kamalloy.livejournal.com 2004-10-06 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I know a bunch born in September, but not so many born in October. There's me, you, my cousin (whose birthday is also today), and... that's about it.

Must be something about those winter months... *eg*

For the record you share your birthday with Amy Jo Johnson. That's right! You share your birthday with the Pink Power Ranger herself ;)

Happy Birthday!

[identity profile] chiv.livejournal.com 2004-10-07 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
go on, ask me stuff!

[identity profile] elanya.livejournal.com 2004-10-17 06:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Belated interview questions!

1: Why the beard?
2: You can only pick one form of entertainment for the rest of your life. What is it?
3: What is the subject that you are the least comfortable discussing in mixed company, and why? (Mean question ;)
4: What would your dream vacation be?
5: I hear through the grapevine that you have recently become involved in an online romance. Do you think that online romances have any special merits over more taditional 'face to face' ones? What are they? What are the worst draw-backs, not counting the fact that you can't physically see your ladyfried (since that isn't the fault of the internet)?

[identity profile] shanmonster.livejournal.com 2004-10-12 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Happy belated birthday!

And if you've got questions for me, go for it....

[identity profile] elanya.livejournal.com 2004-10-17 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm, I will see if I can ask you things that will draw out new and interesting Shan responses, yes, that is my quest!

1. When you were younger, you were veeeery sexually active, and now you are very much nott (Poor f00!). Why do you think your attitudes towards, or interest in, sex changed?
2. Your opinions and attitudes tend to be very dynamic - for example, your 'favourite' books, movies, and authors tend to fluctuate with your moods. Why do you think that is, and how do you think this dynamism affects you in general, as a person?
3. If you could change any one thing about Dave, what would it be?
4. You can have any pet at all, and are guaranteed that it will (magically?) not get sick or die until you do. This will be your companion (and responsability!) for *life*. What do you pick?
5. If you could start a fashion trend, what would it be?
