I had a really fucked up dream about murder and violence last night, so I thought that my clear duty was to relate it here.

I was walking home along the river (dream geography... my route follows the river but doens't come very close to it). There was a gravel parking lot that led down to the banks, presumably for boaters. I noticed a guy getting out of a car. He was fairly large, with longish hair, wearing a medium blue golf shirt. His car was an old baby blue mercedes, and the license plate started wit BRX or something close. He was taking out a catatonic person in a wheelchair. I knew he'd seen me, because we made eye contact, as I was watching him.

I knew in my mind what was going on. The river was flooding, and this was sort of a strange, macabre, local custom. The wheelchair person was wearing a hospital robe. He was going to dump her (I think it was a woman, with limp, blonde hair) in the river to die. I watched with shocked fascination as he did this, the waters immediately rising to cover her as he waded back up to his car. He got in and started to drive away. I started to get closer to the river, wondering if there was anything I could do to help his victim, but he started to pull closer to me, and I deemed it too dangerous. I also got the idea that this was a euthanistic murder, that his intent wasn't cruel. I wasn't sure what to do, but I noted what I could of his licensplate as he drove away.

There was a small police station nearby. I was trying to decide what I could, or should tell them, if anything. In the end, I decided to do nothing for the moment, and I continued home.

I arrived at my building. In my dream it looked at lot like the apartment complexes on Forest Hill in Fredericton, and nothing like Tar River. I started to go in, but I noticed that there was something of a scene going on. I'm not sure how I knew all this; maybe I'd had a dream flashback to some scenes that I wasn't in or that were outside of the linear chronology. There was a family who lived in the building who had two teenaged sons, the elder of which was slightly mentally imbalanced. He had just shot his brother (twice), and was now freaking out. I met him in the entrance to the building, and though I somehow knew what had happened, he didn't know I did. He was panicked and antsy, and had his gun (a big, shiny, silver revolver, maybe a colt .45, but what do I know?) shoved down the front of his pants.

I knew that I had to do something, this time, that people would be in danger if I didn't. I also think that the cops were on their way, so I needed to delay him. I started hitting on him, which confused him at first. He was suspicious, as well. I tried to distract him by kissing him, trying to make out, but he was too nervous, and saw through my ploy when I reached for his, ahem, gun. We struggled briefly over the weapon, but I had the upper hand. For some reason, it was completely okay for me to shoot this kid in the head. I aimed, holding the gun in both hands, at eye level and close to my face. This wouldn't be the smartest way to handle a handgun in real life, and I think I was partly conscious of that during the dream. In any case, it turned out that the chamber was empty. I was surprised because I'd thought he'd intended to kill more people. We struggled some more, and I would up using the gun barrel to choke him, pressing it up against his windpipe until he eiher passed out or died. I remember being really calm throughout this, in contrast to his panicked confusion. I think he was crying towards the end of it. I'm not reallly clear what all happened afterwards, as I started to wake up. I have an idea of how it was supposed to go, but it is kind of hazy: basically, the police came and collected him (or possibly, they had been watching all along), and I was debriefed, and told them about the man in the mercedes.

Anyway, I thought that was just too strange not to relate. What seemed important to me in the dream were all the moral choices to be made in the first scene (do I help this girl, do I report this man, and so on) as compared to the clear path of action in the second. The mind is a strange place.

I dreamed that our cat was hurt falling off the roof, and that the brakes on my car didn't work. Some other stuff too, and I don't think any of it was nice, because I woke up feeling very, very meh.
