I really wanted the Lacedaemonians to win at Pylos. :(

Bad! Bad Spartans! You're supposed to fight to the *death*! You were being so hardcore up to that point! Even the Athenians were dissapointed in you! Bad!

*Spanks them!*

*Goes back to reading.*

Once they had held off the Persian army at Thermoplyae, and died to a man doing so, the Spartans really never had to prove anything ever again. They were actually pretty slack by the Peloponnesian War and to rigid in their practices. Most of their defeats later on were mainly because of their inability to adapt to new tactics and technology, such as cavalry.

Yeah, some of their early sea tactics are really baffling... clearly devised by people who *aren't* seamen. It is interesting to watch as the war progress how both sides tactics develop. The Peloponnese start using better naval tactics, and the Athenian allies start getting ballsy enough to actually invade Laconia (after Pylos). Then the Spartans spend a few years trying to end the war and get their men back... I just read up to the treaty ten years in when they manage to negotiate a truce with that as part of it... However I also know the book isn't done yet, so I don't know if they actually get their prisoners released or why it keeps going. I know a lot of their allies, especially those shit-disturbing Corinthians aren't happy with the treaty. I predict it will be their fault. ^-^
