My name is Heather Hatch, and I hope you will excuse my contacting you completely out of the blue like this. I learned about you through a rather strange route (through the Harvard alumni cruise you'll be the study leader for, in fact...), and I was encouraged to see someone else who is interested academically in piracy. Your dissertation sounds very intriguing!

I myself am currently enrolled in the Maritime Studies MA program at East Carolina University, where I am hoping to be able to examine questions of Golden Age piracy from an historical archaeological approach. I am primarily interested in examining questions of projected and assumed pirate identities through written documents and martieral culture where available (and, in the long term, to find and examine more material culture, from land and marine environments if possible).

I just thought I would contact you to say hello, since it seems that we have fairly similar interests, if different disciplines and angles from which to approach them.
