You'll probably have the best luck looking for bulletin boards(real ones) at hobby/game shops.

I will warn you, however, that it's quite likely you will find that southern U.S. gamers aren't like Canadian gamers. ;^)

Well, I hope not, or they may shun me ;)

When I was living in NC back in the 1990's, I found a bunch of gamers on the Bulletin board at Media Play.

Hehe...I'm interested in knowing the difference between Canadian Gamers and Southern US gamers.

I found them (the Southern US gamers) uh,....much different from Boston gamers.

Sorta strange in a way but most of them good people.

Well, I haven't found Media Play, or any other gaming/comic shops yet... I'm limited to walking for transportation, and I don't even have a phone book yet to show me where things are! If you can give me any direction, that's be great :)

Anyway, I don't know if I can explain what us CDN gamers are like (or at least, the Fredericton crowd) but I'll try... We tend to like a lot of character development, and pursuing relationships of diffferent kinds between PC's and with NPC's... More story less fighting.

We also have a surprising concentration of girls. I have in fact run games with only female players, where I have had 3-4 players. I've never even heard of this happening elsewhere ;)

I don't know any southern gamers yet, save Fiachra (and I know we rubbed off a little on him ^-^), so we shall see :)

Well, as a Southern Gamer, it works sorta like this:

SGs: Optimized character builds for combat/versatility. Hours spent working out the best build. Backgrounds either very silly(if detailed) or very sparse and developed primarily as the game progresses. Lots of combats, down-time usually handled as "I'm going to go do this" "Ok. You do that.". NPC interactions tend to be either bullshitting sessions or chestbeating.

CGs: Rules? What rules? Hours spent working out character's origin/personality. Backgrounds usually very intricate, and as the game proceeds only get more intricate. Minimal combat, PCs tend to have conflicts that can eat up game sessions, and massive downtime both in-game and out-of-game(via IRC/emails with the DM) with lots of relationships 'n intrigue. See that last part of last sentence for NPC interaction.

And at least in this town, there aren't any real female gamers. "Real" being the operative word here, since the few that are tend to be either cheats or attention sluts. We don't know why, but it seems to be that way all over VA, from what I've heard of friends who gamed at tournaments and went to LARPs elsewhere.

Ok, Canadian gamers sound more like the Bostonian gamers where there tended to be more character development and a story; however, I was one of only two females that played.

Southerners seemed more dependent on rolling the die to get on with the fight, I agree.

Turn em on now to Story development! I was located in Hickory (foothills of the appalachian mountains) when I lived in NC. I'm not sure where a Media Play is in your area but when you do get to a phone book and find out, try the book section of Media Play. I'm not sure if Best Buy has the same type deal (bulletins) but you may check that as well. Most anyone you meet there can probably direct you to Best Buy and would be just as happy to tell you where a Media Play is located if there is one. Hickory is a much smaller town than where you are at, so I am guestimating the stores will be there.

Let me know how you fare!

*laughs* Role playing as the lowest of the clubs. *shakes head*

I can think of a few groups which shouldn't be permitted clubs... the KKK among them, for instance.

I actually just read the article now and I am somewhat indignant (yes it took me awhile...big words).

As long as everything is consentual really who cares? The percentage of people who practice some form of BDSM is roughly percentage wise the same number who are gay/lesbian.

Having been the president of a club for gamers I have to say that I would rather have a club for BDSM because there would probably be more hygenie and a few less tops. Also truthfully I think meetings would be far more interesting.
