g-g-g-g-ghooooosts (dream)
Last night I dreamed about ghosts.
It was a four part dream, and I was woken by my alarm at 9 and went back to sleep afterward, so I don't remember it all that well. When I actually woke up, closer to 10, I tried to write it down, but the first part was so fuzzy that it was basically gone except for knowing that it had existed. I wrote it down out of order, but I'll try to copy it in a more sequential way.
Part one: ???? Mystery! Possibly some ghosts though. This might also be where the general setting comes from.
The building was like an old brick institutional building, rectangular and with at least two levels. Possibly it used to be a school, and may have also been used as a dormitory at some point. It might actually be modeled, now that I am more awake and have had some time to reflect, on the empty hospital up the street that is slated for demolition. There was one main entry, which was split level. I think the right side may have been in more use. Most of the dream happened in the left (oooooh sinister) side. The building was run down - the walls were a yellowed white/grey, the carpet was a dirty orangey brown. There was fluorescent lighting when you came in, but it was much more spotty once you went upstairs. This building featured in all of the parts of my dream, as far as I recall. When you went up the stairs on the left, it opened into a big open hall or foyer.
Part Two: Science!?! Ghost science? POV-me is a researcher. I have two female colleagues.
I spent most of the time alone in the described building. I'm not sure if they were doing something else, or are running late. I was at the building, exploring. I experienced some ghosts. Sadly the ghost experiences are the least clear part of my memories of the dream, sorry! There was am omnipresent oppressive atmosphere, though. I'm also not sure at this distance if we were there to look for ghosts or for something else and happened to find them and then changed out agenda. I don't think the women had the same experiences I did, and I don't remember whether or not they believed me.
I found some kind of video game. It had either a screen or a projection that took up a whole wall - this was in, or I set it up in, the large upstairs foyer. There were two large guns that connected to....somewhere, via trailing wires. They took two hands, and were made of transparent coloured plastic. They were not realistic at all - they almost looked like big bop-its. One was purple and one was red. They may have had labels on them. You shot at something on the screen. I figured out somehow that the guns are able to affect the ghosts in some way. Sadly this is also a detail that's lacking from my waking dream. The ghost stuff was creepy enough that I think I tried to purge it before I went back to sleep. Part two ended with some kind of resolution of ghostly stuff via the game, anyway.
Part Three: Badly Designed Research. I am possibly myself, definitely someone other than the researcher from part two. I have come to take part in that person's research.
I was greeted by one of the other two women. She either warned me that it was unsafe/poorly designed, or else she just came across as so highly dubious and uncertain that I was wary. She was unclear about what was going on, but she sent me up the stairs. The person who was supposed to be running it (me from part 2) wasn't there, so I had to figure out things on my own. I could feel/sense the ghosts around (they were unhappy/angry - I never learned anything about them though. There were definitely multiple ghosts. I think one was a woman). I tried to use the purple gun on the ghosts. They were too fast, maybe, or else they knew what to expect, and it wasn't working well. Partly this is because the cords (they were super ridiculously long in this part) kept getting tangled on my feet and everything else, and it was hard to move around the room. It got worse once someone else (the researcher, maybe?) was there to use the other (red) gun. Some things I don't remember well happened. Maybe we even played with the ghosts some? But eventually we stopped, and I think we called the experiment a failure. The woman downstairs was not surprised.
Part Four. Gaming Gone Wrong; A Flood. I am myself, there are other (undefined) people with me. We go to my friend Dean's place to play a game. He lives in the building.
This is the part I remember most clearly. My friend Dean was running a game - it was bi-weekly and this was his week. He lived in the building - the foyer upstairs is now his living tum. There is a beat up old couch (orange-brown pleater, to match the carpet) and a matching chair. The room is otherwise empty but generally gross and dirty, with debris and dirt on the floor. We know now that the place is haunted, but we may not have before. None of us really want to play here, and we discuss it as a group and decide to go to my place. At this point Dean says that this is what he had hoped for, and I am annoyed he didn't say something before, to save us the time/inconvenience/danger of coming to this ghost-infested shit hole.
As went go to leave, the building was surrounded by water, and this is somehow the ghosts' fault (side note - it was raining in the real world). It is night. Possibly there was already a lake nearby and it had now flooded, possibly this was all new. It was deep and rising fast. We either didn't have or cant get to any boats. Eventually, I found a picnic table, and a single oar. It steered remarkably well! Someone else grabbed a straw broom. We all piled on. The picnic table was underwater, but still maneuverable.
We made it out away from the building, more towards the center of the flooding/lake (there was a coniferous forest on the short to our right, I don't know about anything else). We found what looked like a little marina where there were a bunch of windsurfing boards all moored together. This is not something you do with windsurfing boards, to my knowledge, but that's dreams for you. We were scavenging for emergency supplies, hoping to find first aid kits and life jackets. At the top of one of the masts I found a mesh bag that had some tiny flashing emergency beacons - they were small, about the size of my finger tip, and one LED each - that we could clip to clothing. That was all we found, that I recall. I realized then that I still had my phone in my pocket (possibly I was wearing my housecoat) and that it was dry, and we could use it as a flashlight if we needed. It never occurred to me to try and use it to call or text anyone. That was around when I woke up.
