Well, this weekend is Hallowe'en and there is a party at my department. I was assuming I want to go because... Hallowe'en! I came up with a costume and have it mostly together (pirate unicorn, as you do) and have been planning what to make for both this and my work party on Hallowe'en proper.

This means testing said baking (apple tarts with rum? or with cheese? bake filling for both and test :), and also having to go to the store to get whatever I wind up needing. We were supposed to be doing sculpture cleaning today and I was going to go after that, but that got cancelled on account of horrible weather (wet and cold), so instead of being able to stop on my way home, I have to make a special trip.

But then I was lookin at the list of people who are confirmed to be going, and other than the hosts there are maybe 3-4 people I know at all and none I know well, so... I dunno. I want to do something because it is Hallowe'en! But I don't know these people and my idea of party fun is not most people's - I'd rather chill and watch bad movies and play board or cad games than get smashed and play beer pong. However there will be fire which is always nice, and other dogs if the weather is nice, so... I dunno - still worth it I suppose, if I can even find a ride.

I think the weather is making me feel blah - also the fact that despite being woken at 8, I didn't really start my day until like 10:30 -_-

I suppose the best thing to do is to do some dissertation writing this morning, then go to the store this afternoon after it is warmer (not that it is actually cold), and work on my costume tonight. I need to figure out my hooves and decide how fancy-pirate I want to dress with the unicorn bits (which will be head, tail and hopefully hooves!) I really wish I'd found some white tights or pants!

Anyway, I have a whole pot of tea to drink and apple things in the oven, so all in all not that much to complain about :)

...Oh lols I also have a CHEESEBURGERS DATE with [profile] tethys123 that I only just remembered! And have offered to help her baby wrangle after for a bit... so - new plans will happen as we go :D Better go get dressed :)

Deposition of John Vickers; late of the Island of Providence. In Nov. last Benjamin Hornigold arrived at Providence in the sloop Mary of Jamaica, belonging to Augustine Golding, which Hornigold took upon the Spanish coast, and soon after the taking of the said sloop, he took a Spanish sloop loaded with dry goods and sugar, which cargo he disposed of at Providence, but the Spanish sloop was taken from him by Capt. Jennings of the sloop Bathsheba of Jamaica. In January Hornigold sailed from Providence in the said sloop Mary, having on board 140 men, 6 guns and 8 pattararas, and soon after returned with another Spanish sloop, which he took on the coast of Florida. After he had fitted the said sloop at Providence, he sent Golding's sloop back to Jamaica to be returned to the owners: and in March last sailed from Providence in the said Spanish sloop, having on board near 200 men, but whither bound deponent knoweth not. About 22nd April last, Capt. Jenings arrived at Providence and brought in as prize a French ship mounted with 32 guns which he had taken at the Bay of Hounds, and there shared the cargo (which was very rich consisting of European goods for the Spanish trade) amongst his men, and then went in the said ship to the wrecks where he served as Comodore and guardship. There are at Providence about 50 men who have deserted the sloops that were upon the wrecks, and committ great disorders in that Island, plundering the inhabitants, burning their houses, and ravishing their wives. One Thomas Barrow formerly mate of a Jamaica brigantine which run away some time ago with a Spanish marquiss's money and effects, is the chief of them and gives out that he only waits for a vessell to go out a pirating, that he is Governor of Providence and will make it a second Madagascar, and expects 5 or 600 men more from Jamaica sloops to join in the settling of Providence, and to make war on the French and Spaniards, but for the English, they don't intend to meddle with them, unless they are first attack'd by them; nevertheless Barrow and his crew robb'd a New England brigantine, one Butler master, in the harbour of Providence and took a Bermuda sloop, beat the master and confined him for severall days, but not finding the said sloop fitt for their purpose, discharged her. About a year ago one Daniel Stillwell formerly belonging to Jamaica, and lately settled on Isle Aethera, went in a small shallop, with John Kemp, Matthew Low, two Dutchmen, and—Darvell to the coast of Cuba and there took a Spanish lanch having on board 11,050 pieces of eight, and brought the same into Isle Aethera; and Capt. Thomas Walker of Providence having received advice thereof from the Governor of Jamaica, seized Stillwell and his vessell, but upon the coming of Hornigold to Providence, Stillwell was rescued and Capt. Walker threatned to have his house burned for offering to concern himself, Hornigold saying that all pirates were under his protection. It is common for the sailors now at Providence (who call themselves the flying gang) to extort money from the inhabitants, and one Capt. Stockdale who came passenger with deponent to Virginia was threatned to be whipp'd for not giving them what they demanded, and just upon his coming from thence he payed them 20sh. for which the aforementioned Barrow and one Peter Parr gave him a receipt on the publick account. Many of the inhabitants of that Island had deserted their habitations for fear of being murdered. Sometime about the beginning of March one Capt. Farnandez, an inhabitant of Jamaica, in the sloop Bennet mounted with 10 guns and with about 110 men took a Spanish sloop with about three millions of money as it was reported and silks and cochenile to the like value and brought the sloop into Providence and there divided the money and goods among the men and is returned to the North side of Jamaica to try whether he may go home in safety and if he found he could not he gave out that he would return to Providence and settle amongst the Rovers. Signed, John Vickers. Endorsed as preceding. 2 pp.

Deposition of Capt. Edward Holmes. Late an inhabitant of the Bahama Islands and one of the Lords' Deputies there, he did about Aug. 27 last arrive with his own sloop in Harbor Island under that Government with his wife and some of his family, when a vessell under French colours fired a valley of small armes upon him, and at the same time another valley was fired from the shore, and imediately the captain of the said vessell, whose name was Martell (a Frenchman) with a canoe and armed men and his Lieutenant in another canoe like wise came on board in a violent manner, and took hold of deponent's wife and stript her, and the Quarter-Master presented a loaded pistoll att her breast, thereby to force her to discover deponent's wealth, and searcht her very haire of her head, and threatned to fling her overboard. Then Capt. Martell ordered them to bee carried on shore and there tyed deponent's wife fast to a tree, and one of his men struck her with a sword, deponent being then bound on shore. Next morning hee was carryed on board his own vessell and his hands seized to the mast, and the quarter-master belonging to Capt. Martell with his naked cutlass beat him on his back, as was guessed, 500 blows, untill all thought him dead, the quarter-master still continueing to push the deponent in the face with, the point of his sword upon every groane hee made. And then deponent comeing to himself Capt. Martell's gang lighted eight peeces of match about 3 inches long and tyed them betweene his fingers and burnt them about half an hour by the glass, to force him to confess his wealth, and afterwards they tyed him with his back to the scuppers and brought lighted matches to tye to his toes, and swore they would burne his privy members, and so they cruelly extorted deponent's discovery of what he had and took itt from him, and so turned him and his wife and child on shore, striped, about 8 leagues from their habitation in great necessity, and many other cruelties and barbarities Capt. Martell and his gang did then and there comitt. Signed, Edwd. Holmes. Endorsed, Recd. 12th, Read 15th Sept., 1709. Recd. with duplicate of Col. Bennet's letter of March 1st, 1708/9. 1 p. From the Boston News Letter account of Blackbeard's death:

"Maynard and Teach themselves began the Fight with their Swords, Maynard making a thrust, the point of his Sword went against Teach's Cartridge Box, and bended it to the Hilt, Teach broke the Guard of it, and wounded Maynard`s Fingers, but did not disable him where upon he Jumpt back, threw away his Sword and fired his Pistol, which wounded Teach. Demelt struck in between them with his Sword and cut Teach's Face pretty much; in the Interim both Companies ingaged in Maynard's Sloop, one of Maynard's Men being a Highlander, ingaged Teach with his broad Sword, who gave Teach a cut on the Neck, Teach saying, well done Lad; the Highlander reply'd, if it be not well done, I'll do it better, wich that he gave him a second stroke, which cut off his Head, laying it flat on his Shoulder..."

The local legends say that after it was thrown overboard, teach's body swam around the ship several times before sinking. Clearly this was just the aftereffects of the Quickening :V

Ye and each of you are adjudged and sentenced to be carried back to the Place from whence you came, from thence to the Place of Execution, and there within the Flood-marks to be hanged by the Neck 'till ye are Dead, Dead, Dead. And the Lord have Mercy upon your Souls.

After this, You [names], are to be taken down, and your Bodies hung in Chains

Still looking for things you think you know about pirates!

Also - i am going to a dressy party on Sunday. I am wearing a sleek red silk dress, black corset, and (hopefully) pirate shoes. i need accessory suggestions that I can either concoct out of stuff I have or beg/borrow/steal from others. I suddenly *really* want a jolly roger cameo choker, because that would be badass.

Also, suggestions re: hair. I was thinking about doing something with the acre of black silk ribbon I have. I considered ringlets but I doubt I'll have time :/

I have more to say but, alas, no time!
