for my boys

You need to Read This.

Written for a man, targeted at a male audience - so why am I only seeing women link it around? Fail. *Pokes boys*

Read it today, generally agree.

If I linked 1% of what I read...

I couldn't even finish it because the bright font on black eventually started to make my eyes bleed.

I have it open in my browser at work, ready to read tomorrow.

Thank you for posting that link. I'll repost it to my own LJ in a bit, and it's been tweeted already.

Yeah - it is a good link, and it's been posted around on my Fl a bit in the last day or so.

But it is starting to bother me more and more that all the people engaged with this stuff are women, when more and more studies are making the (very relevant) point that this is something (education) that needs to be aimed more at men.

On the one hand - there is something satisfying about pointing at men and saying 'This is your problem - men rape women, you should do something about it, this is not our fault.' On the other hand it does strike me as leaving/putting back the responsibility to 'take care' of women in men's hands which is sort of self defeating -_-

Was just thinking about it again -_-.

You might also like this link that was linked to me along with this one. I don't agree with all of it, but it is worth thiking about.

Of course it's women who are more engaged with this stuff. People have to want to be educated to engage in something. People have to be aware it's a problem. Also, you know, privilege? Kind of a factor, when all is said is done. It's usually those who are targeted, who can't get away from a problem or a reality who are the most engaged about it. Anyone else has a choice as to whether they want to get involved or not.

I've read that article before, as well. I think I may just do a post with the links (along with one I'll tag on here for you as well) and no other comment.

The Not Rape Epidemic

I think things like this change in waves, too. I think some young(ish) people *are* starting to take responsibility for the things their colleagues say (I'm one.) If we and others keep the pressure on, maybe we're on the brink of a real shift in discrimination in general.

I hope.

I can't, sorry. This is one of those things that makes me really, really angry... even though Margot (http://margotv.livejournal.com/) is fictional, I could have really used a punching bag with his name on it that day.

[identity profile] elanya.livejournal.com 2009-11-24 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
But if it makes you angry, and there are things that you, as a man, can do to help stop it from happening - including helping spread education about how these problems are allowed to persist.... Why would you not? I don't understand.

[identity profile] meallanmouse.livejournal.com 2009-11-25 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
That's the only way it'll change, and you are quite right - some are starting to do just that. =)

It's just a really small number still, so here's to hoping for more and bigger waves, eh?

For sure!

I can't read things like that in their entirety or discuss them in a rational manner. Quite honestly, I think I would make a mess of it and make things worse (e.g. discredit what is being said because I am really irrational on the topic), not better. I recognize that this is a limitation of mine.
