Actually, I never thought of it that way, but you may be on to something. A more polite version, certainly, as you don't select recipients, you just leave it out for people to read or ignore as they see fit.

When I point an umbrella at any angle, it's because the rain is driving it at an angle... or I'm trying to shelter something specific (e.g. another person).
