Okay, D&D charater rant to follow, so I'll it behind a cut for non gamers to ignore :p
So, my Diablotin character, Kalman, just made it to third level.
And now that I'm living in the House of Geek, I actually have access to pretty much all the 3rd ed. books and supplements, so I can get a better idea of what I can get and do some character planning. And now that I have these resources at my disposal, I realize I've been on crack. I kind of suspected it for a while, but I didn't confirm that until recently.
I always thought it would be conceptually cool for Kalman to pick up a gun at some point, mostly because he is rich, so he could afford it, and also, they are kind of exotic. So I tried to plan for that at character creation, thinking I would pick it up with a later feat, but start with some ones that would help me out. At character creation, I didn't have *any* of the books, so I relied heavily on consultation with a bunch of people I know who are more familiar with the rules than me.
I think I must have got my wires crossed somewhere, though, because I thought for some reason that I couldn't take the exotic weapon proff right off the bat, and that I needed to have a +2 Base attack Bonus first. I knew that I needed Point Blank Shot to get any of the cool ranged weapon feats, later though. I also thought that I *could* take Rapid Reload, and I think I must have thought that it would help me in the future with this gun thing.
Now, with hindsight and access to all the books, so that I can figure stuff out for myself and actually understand what I'm talking about, I realize that I didn't need the additional base attack bonus to get the exotic weapons (I actually had that pointed out to me a while ago, but, meh), but that it was a pre-requisite for Rapid Reload, which, unlike most of the ranged weapon feats applies only to corssbows. D'oh.
Basically, this means that I've had a feat that I should't have, since level one, and it is even one that isn't going to be particualrly useful to me in the future. Bugger. If I had realized that all right from the start, I would have taken Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot right from the start, and goid only knows why I didn't to start with anyway :p
Not having precise shot is a pain, because of the huge penalties to shooting into melee,\. Now, I had been recently debating whether I shouldtake a level of fighter this level to snag an extra feat, and pick up both the exotic(firearms) proff *and* precise shot. And I now see how I shouldsn't have had to worry about it, and kick myself. What I am going to do is stick with Rogue this level (I want to up my stealthy skills a bunch), and take fighter next level, and suck up and deal with my stupid useless feat.
And yes, I realize that except for the damage, a crossbow is generally a better weapon, but it is a style thing, so bite me. I expect Kalman won't abandon his crossbow anyway. I'm really just debaiting if I should get him a musket as well as a pistol, and then buy the sniper-y feat at level 6...
Whee! Okay, enough of that ;p Can you tell I'm terminally bored? Expect more updates as the night goes on...
