elanya at 08:15pm on 14/10/2004Well, at least one person asked for a little bit of background for the story that I intend to write, so here it is,
Okay, where to start? First of all, I'm not going to go into a whole lot of plot details, because I'm hoping to save those for the story itself. I will start with where daniel comes from, and then move on to where he went, and go from there.
This is going to be a little difficult, because I don't remember which came first anymore. we have the chicken: the very first game I ever ran, Mage: the Ascention (2nd ed) game set in Seattle, and the egg: the NUrpg, or Nexus Universe RPG, an intereactive story that I joined sometime when I was in highschool. Daniel was an in important NPC in my Mage game, though he never got *used* too much, and also my second NuRPG character. I *think* Mage came first, but I'm really not sure anymore. It hardly matters, because the history is all the same anyway, and the game died before he became very significant (though he was somewhat harassed by some of the younger characters ;)
The concept behind Daniel is that he was recruited into the NWO (New World Order) in university, but initially part of a special program to test the importance of having certain social ties to moral and such. Basically, they wanted to see if people who were allowed to have real lives outside the Order were more or less motivated. In Daniel's case, it seemed to be working out until circumstance conspired (coincidence? maybe... ;) to royally screw things up, the specifics of which will be one of the main foci of this story. He was absorbed back into the ranks and, basically, very heavily brainwashed. He was kept in the lower ranks (basically as a generic Man in Black) for an extended period of time, even though he'sd initially showed potential for more, because the honchos were worried for various reasons.
Eventually, some weirdness happens, and he winds up on NU (which also stands for Nas Unara, the plante name ;), and goes through a process of self-re-discovery (litterally.... painfully rediscovering his individuality, and learning to adjust to life on his own in a high magic world, and going through what was basically a drawn out Seeking, which is to say becoming a more powerful Mage ;). He gets involved in various things there along the way.... and eventually gets back to earth. His time on NU has basically compromised his acceptance of the Technocratic paradigm, as well as his faith in the Technocracy itself.
And that's where he is now, dealing with all kinds of reprecussions, but especially the personal ones. And that's where the story picks up. Anyone who is interested in seeing *some* of Daniel's Nu Adventured can find chapters 1-8, at least, in the online archive. Look in archives, starting in time period 3. The stories overlapped with other people's stories, in some cases, which is why they are arranged as they are. Also please keep in mine that those were written a good 5 years ago or more at this point.
That is actually more than I'd thought I would say. I want to see if I can write something where you don't *have* to know all his past, because either it is brought up well enough in this take, or else because it is secondary to the present story. Daniel was always a character intensely driven by personal interest plots, not so much by action plots.
