Well, I know that he is on the cast list, and I know that he is also attending Dragon Con (Well, Ron Glass is ;) with some of the other cast this year in Atlanta (Which makes me go.... oooooh, so *close* :o)
Neither Book or Kaylee are in the trailer, as far as I could tell. But Joss Whedon made a post today, as part of announcing sneak previews of the movie in 10 US cities, where he said something like "the trailer had too little Book and Kaylee." I think that's fairly strong confirmation they're not going to be absent in the movie - I bet the preview-people just didn't want to confuse those who've never seen the show before with a bunch of characters they have no idea who they are.
My question is, is the evil black guy supposed to be Jubal Early? I'm assuming yes, and they just couldn't get Richard Brooks or whatever his name is for the film. But perhaps it's a new evil black guy ;)
I'm not sure. I don't think it is early, but he might be in it. I will also say that the trailer really only 'focused' on a few people... even Simon was hardly in it... Inara was barely on screen, and I'm not even sure she had any lines... I'm sure you are right about it just being about not overwhelming people.
