My mother had a Magical Power that I will call the Voice of Dog. It was a tone of voice she could use to make other people's dogs behave. I always envied that ability and tonight i discovered that i do have it, a bit!
I was walking Jola up a rarely-traveled side-street near the ballpark on Anderson - I can never remember the name, but it runs along the side, then parallel the walking trail in the park and dead-ends there, and I was coming from the walking rail up that street towards Anderson. I have no idea if that makes any sense to anyone other than me @_@ Anyway, I heard a dog barking, which isn't uncommon, but through the headpones I could tell that this dog was getting closer that it should have done. And I look over and there is thins fluffy dark brown or black dog with a purple collar, a littler smaller than Jola, barking/growling its way towards us. Maybe it wanted to play, but that was not entirely the vibe I was getting. It was more a "hey get outta my street!" sorta thing, but not *super aggressive*. I did not feel like fending fluffy off of Jola, so i summoned the Voice of Dog and said "NO.” and it stopped and hesitated and lowered it head, but still barked a bit. So then I told it to “Go Home,” and proceeded on my way after it slunk back a little more with that look that dogs give when they no they have been bad. It didn’t go back where it came from and it did bark a little more (but tentatively, in that sort of “yeah, I got the last word in, hah! ...from safely over here.” kind of way) and gave me no more trouble. So I now consider myself to have demonstrably leveled in Voice of Dog techniques. Now if I can only get that to work on the actually aggressive dogs in the yard across from my bus stop....
I was going to say something else but I forget what, bah!
(experiment crossposting from semagic.... posting from the DW page doesn’t cascade through to facebook for whatever reason, so lets see if this does!)
