Speen = standard, post

Okay. So my job is to help create this glossary, at the moment I'm working with English and Dutch terms. Standard. What kind of standard? The flag kind? The approved official unit of measurement kind? The obscure kind of old fashioned knee? None of these has an obvious secondary meaning of 'post'.

If I look up speen in a online technical dictionary, it gives me the following translations from Dutch: nipple, vacuum-cleaner, pacifier, dummy, comforter. Not much help there.

The word 'standard' already exists in the glossary, which is kind of convenient. It means I could just enter 'speen' as a relevant Dutch translation, and leave it at that. Until I come back to 'standard' in Italian - lets say this time it clearly does refer to the flag. Does that Italian word mean the same as speen? Who can say! Bah.

It is little things like this that make this challenging, and also tend to stall out my progress (you know, cause me to write lj posts -_-)... It is good/bad, I suppose. At least I get to think a bit, even if I can't come up with a good solution :p And it makes my job more than just data entry. I usually have to look up words in at least one language before moving on!

...I found a definition of 'standard which means 'an upright support or supporting part.' I'm running with it :p
