Today., I am a quarter of a century old. Apparently, Lisa had been planning on decorating O2L, but forgot yesterday and didn't have time... for shame. She did write 'happy birthday Heather' on the menu board though, so lots of people said hello, and the Tony's Music Box fellows sang for me (Hal started it).
Birthday events leading up to today have also been pretty awesome, so far. On Friday, I went and hung out with Frankie, who is my super cool co-worker, at her place, because one of her roomates was holding an unexpected 'party'.I ran into one of Shan's students, who I was apparently in some classes with... her name is also Heather, but Frankie just calls her The Evil One. She seemed surly in an unplesant way, and generally disagreeable. A friend of her roomate(Adam)'s. It was nice to see her in a more social environment. We may run into her on Sunday, if anyone want s to go dancing at Manhattan Brass's techno night. Frankie rules!
Saturday, as already stated, Jodie made me find my awesome labradorite pendant. I also went to dinner with mom and Hazel at the Burrito. Yum! And also, I bought *myself* a birthday present! The Egyptian stall at the mall had a darabukka that I coveted, so, I bought it. I *heart* it. I will practice lots, since Hazel and Jodoe only get home from work hours after I do :D (And also, I will practice my other drums, and various assorted woodwind instruments, as well).
The reason I bought it then was for the dance workshop on Sunday, with George Sawa. He rocks, a lot. He is a historian who studies medieval Arabic music, and also Arabic music generally, and is an excellent performer and teacher. I learned some really neat things. He is also bilingual! (well, okay, trilingual, but it is his English and French language skills which are going to be relevant to this post). This is important, you see, because the workshop was being given at the University of Moncton. A French university.... and so, the workshop had to be at *least* 50% French. This was not advertised. Fortunately, I can still understand french perfectly well in such an environment. Other people, however, do not... There were both Anglo-and-Franco-phones who were frustrated by the format, I'm sure. Again, the problem was that there was no warning that this was going to be a bilingual event, and as far as I can tell, this means no warning for George either, so the talk was mostly in French. For the second workshop (the dance focused one), the instructor (Nada Lanteigne), was overtired, and had poor English, and what she planned to teach was only of minimal relevance. It could have been much better done, I am positive, but since George was so awesome, I am not dissapointed n my experience. Afterwards, we (that is, Shan, Dave, Kathryn and I), went to two of the Frenchy's stores, and I scored some really awesome finds. Then we went to dinner at an overrated 'Italian' place, and I fell asleep in the car on the drive home. I failed to be social later on in the evening, but went to bed early (around 11) instead.
My mom just dropped by and gave me more birthday money! I can't decide if I should put this towards the mattress I want, or if I should use it to buy a skin head for my drum. I am finding that it sounds really really ring-y, or tinny... The tone is off, in any case. Ducttape helps some, but not enough. My dumm's are top deadened by it, and my takk's are too sharp. I lack the proper terminology to describe the problem, I think, but I will fiddle until I get it right!
Tonight, it is Diablotin, which I am excited to play. Yay robots! And Hazel has a present for me, which I am sure will be awesome :D Yeah! And if I am really good, maybe Joel will call me.
Oh, as an aside, apparently I haven't posted about this, but I have quit the Lotto Booth, basically because of what they did to Jodie, and my last shift is on Thursday. whee!
Apparently, I am a good girl, because Joel is on the phone now :)
