I'm kind of working on my concept for this Forgotten Realms game. I am going to talk the GM on Wednesaday to get the character worked out. Alas, I'm away this weekend, so I wouldn't be able to get in then. But soon. Soon!
I don't know how he does stats, so I'm thinking purely in terms of concept. I know I am going to start off as some form of sorceror/rogue. Well, rogue first level, clearly, to get all those delicious skill points ;) I am thinking half-elven son-of-a-whore! :D The main focus of the game so far is on some artifact from that proto civilization that has recently come back in FR. The ones who are certainly not Atlanteans, oh no, definitely not ;p Since that's the main thing keeping the party together atm, I need to have some kind of interest in this stuff.
What I am thinking (and I by thinking , I mean spending ages dancing around my room like a crazy woman... I'm having a 'need to move!' night... we need a good dance night somewhere that I can get this out of my system ^-^ At least I am working off the snacks ;p) is that his mother was a high priced courtesan, initially, and that she was basically a 'kept' woman for a long time when he was younger (whether or not the person she was 'kept' by was actually his father can be left a matter of debate). They lived in a really nice place (though not *with him), with servants and stuff, until something happened. Either he had a political failure of some sort and lost his power and his ability to fund a pricey mistress, or else his wife found out (or had enough, whichever) and he had to get rid of her. I like the second option better, I think, bedause then this guy could still be around. Something else to discuss with the GM. In either case, she found herself out of work, and too publically disgraced (or politically dangerous) to find another wealthy patron, so she wound up working at a less quality establishment. By this time, her son (need a name, need a name, ummm... *grabs plant book*... Solanum Dulcamara! He can go by either 'Sol', or something completely different. It is a latin name for bittersweet nightshade, although I think Solanum is the general class name for potatos. Anyway, suits him ;) has become used to a cushier life, although he is old enough (we'll say around 10?) to understand what is happening. I'll say his mother (definitely the Elven one, now that I think about it more. She still needs a name. It shall be...Celandine! Another plant,) has some minor magic tricks to make her more desirable to various customers, so she can still do a decent trade. Life is a lot harder on Sol, who, too old to freeload, is expected to earn his keep *somehow*. He does not become loved by all the other ladies of neotiable affections because he and his mothers are outsiders, and competition, so he gets left to do all their crappiest work, which he loathes (but is better than the alternative!). This, as well as watching his mother wear herself out in this new (to him, at least) lifestyle, embitters young Sol, who starts learning to get out and away as much as he can, lying about where he's been, and generally enhancing his mischief making skills and contacts. When puberty hits, he starts showing signs of having some of his mother's magical talents. She realizes that he is starting to get into more trouble than is probably good for him, anyway, and arranges for him to get some kind of training. I don't know what would work best in this setting, but he is halfway clever at least (I really dont't know what his stats will look like :o), and this period of his life is when he starts realizing a few things. The first is that he doesn't realy have the patience to be a scholar. He is much better at sliding through life on charm. The second is that magic can really help him with this! Finally scholars get a lot of respect, power, and money. He figured that he could learn enoughto fake being a scholar.... So basically I'm setting him up to be kind of a magical con man, with the fun twist that he is probably the illegitimate son of some powerful (local?)politician (although that isn't something he would go around telling people, because it woudln't necessarily be a help). He'll sill be realtively young... early-mid 20's at the latest. What he really wants is the easy life: to be able to live in the lap of luxury again. On the otherhand, he gets bored easily. He knows that there is a general interest in stuff from (Netheril? Are they the right ones?), which means there is a market for actual good, as well as an eager audience to swindle.
See, this works realy well with the current plot the GM has told me about, where everyone is fighting over this artifact that is apparently undetecable by magic. So really, it just looks like a carved rock. And yet allll these people want it. Conman's dream, that is ;)
So anyway, I'm thnking that Arcane trickster might suit him, as somethign to work towards, but I'm open to other suggestions. Anyone? I'm relaly not familiar with Forgotten realms. I know that the campaign has mostly been focused on the north so far (I found a map! It's in the Silver Marches, based out of Silverymoon), there could be a lot of travel, so I could *be* from anywhere. I'll probably talk that over with the GM, too, but if people who are more familiar with the setting have other recommendations, input would be nice :)
In other news, my net was dissappeared as mysteriously as it appeared.... But Charles inspired me, and I drug out my wireless adapter, and managed to thief someone else's connection ;) Now I have to read more Furet. And probably get dressed. And maybe have more to eat than just cake and cookies today. ;p
I think I will cross-post the character stuff to Chicks with Dice :)
