Funny! But also not...

[livejournal.com profile] tiggothy posted this link to a recent CNN article about this season's work on the "Beaufort Inlet Wreck" (witness my masterful use of 'air quotes' ;p)

It is funny, because it is so mindbogglingly misleadig. I laughed out loud the first time I read it, but the more I look at it, the more it becomes just unsettling.

Phil Masters is not a researcher. He is a treasure salver. He (and his company)is not still involved in the excavations, except as an excited observer. Dr. Rogers does not support the identification of the wreck as the QAR at all, but the article does not eally convey his pov on the thing. They just grabbed a useable quote. He must be mightily pissed.

I still think it is funny, but now it is more of a nervous laughter. I'm still planning to print it out to show people at fieldschool, though...
