tielan: (AVG - maria)
A very small pool this year, but I still matched with at least one person who requested Maria & Pepper!

I admit, I would have liked to write a treat for [archiveofourown.org profile] CamrynBarnes as the only other person who asked for Maria/Steve, but simply didn't have the time. I did get a couple of hundred words into several different universes, the problem is reaching a satisfactory ending...

Anyway, my assignment for [archiveofourown.org profile] finnimbrand:

title: Travel By Bubble
pairings/characters: Maria Hill & Pepper Potts, Maria Hill, Pepper Potts, JARVIS.
tags: Alternate Universe - Fairy Tale
notes: I had such trouble with this, because neither Maria nor Pepper manage to fill the 'heroine' roles in femme-focused fairytales in any way, shape, or form - they're not the wanderers or explorers so much as the guardians and maintainers, and so trying to write them in as the heroines involved a lot of backstory and worldbuilding. In the end, I kind of said, "Ah, to heck with it," and just wrote them as the fairy godmothers, because they fit there!
summary:
“Why pink, anyway?” She wondered idly as she combed her fingers through the still-damp strands. “If we can magic the bubble into any color, why pink?”

“We tried making the bubble with all the other colours,” Maria reminded her from where she sat at the portable desk. “Pink’s the most efficient.”

And a treat I wrote for [archiveofourown.org profile] Rivulet027 because I had time and the idea took hold of me:

title: Break My Bones But You Won't See Me Fall
pairing/characters: Bucky/Sam, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, original characters, (background Steve/Maria).
tags: First Meeting, Alternate Universe - Single Parents, Alternate Universe - Human
notes: So I like these two flirting. They seem the type, and they work for me. Plus, the idea of Sam as a single daddy is just too much cute, and I'm pretty sure that Bucky agrees. I kind of 'reused' the character of Pippa from 'And Baby Makes Eight', only Steve is her biodad as well as her father in this universe.
summary:
Sam doesn't hold hands on the first date. Luckily, they're about to have dinner together...

Work was predictably dull.

Knitting was great! I'm getting well into chart 10 (of 13) for Puled by the Sunset. It's very pretty

We walked home, which my hip tolerated, and I have been ding a few basic stretches before bed, which will hopefully help? It feels nice, anyway, though it actually has been making sleeping weird :p I feel like I should go to the doctor but also like going to the doctor is just going to be a giant PITA and maybe not worthwhile. I cant guarantee that any of the individual things bothering me will eb acting up, I'm terrible at describing symptoms, and I don't think there is anything they can do for me anyway :| Diagnosis: I'm old and have not been sufficiently gentle on my body. Probably they will also say I'm overweight and that will help :p pleh

Dear co-workers:

* I cannot finish your urgent project in a timely fashion if you keep interrupting me to ask when your project is going to be finished! Please stop!

* We have already done Thing based on all your requirements (and with your approval!) last quarter. We can just update it instead of spending so much time trying to come up with a new way to do it (only to come up with basically the exact same Thing). There is no need to spend hours reinventing the wheel!

* You have to decide whether you need a meeting to happen ASAP or if you need everyone involved present, because it's July coming up on August, and half the people you need will be out on vacation at any given moment and I have no control of that.

* I don't want healthy snacks in the vending machine. If I am driven to getting food from it, it's generally because I want Frito Lay corn chips or terrible plasticky cheap chocolate, not some sort of chip made from beans or some kind of granola bar! WTF?

no love,

me

I finished The Goblin Emperor tonight. The title is my summary. It was good but not stunning - the story was slow, the intrigues not always very intriguing. The worldbuilding was basically a generic fantasy court with fancy window dressing - very detailed in some cases, but inconsistently so. The main character was nice, but sometimes just really painfully naive and I wanted to smack him. At times he was just oppressively glum. I'm not really sure that he changed as a person, he just got more used to things and more familiar with what was expected of him, so even as a character piece I didn't find it deeply satisfying. He wasn't really interested in things that were going on, so it led to a lot of exposition. There were some good and surprising scenes with various characters, where Maia learns that they are, in fact, fully realized persons in their own right, which are nice. But the conflicts seemed mostly too easily resolved. I liked the pseudo communists? It was enjoyable enough and I'm glad I finally read it, but I'm not sure on what basis it was nominated for so many awards.

Other than that - the strategic planning session thing at work was good, except it went too long in the beginning and we didn't get time to do enough of the actual *planning* work. I still think it was useful - everyone is basically agreed that we need to hire an interpretive planner. there is something regarding the beginning of a plan to make a plan to seriously figure out what merging SA is going to be, though there are still some elephants in the room that haven't been addressed. I had/got to point out that the inventory system for SA is completely inappropriate for a museum because it doesn't have object tracking capabilities - you can only know where objects are if they are in a box. Not good enough. I got to hear N talk crap out of his ass and *also* talk high level archaeological theory and spot the difference ;p When he does the former I want to smack him - when he does the latter I often find myself agreeing with him, which is refreshing. Anyway - I think I'm probably a weirdo because I actually enjoy those sorts of things, except for the part where it is supposed to also be a networking thing and you should probably talk to absolutely anyone outside of the session about the things discussed, and not just run and hide in your office because you can. After a crazy start of the week, though, it's back to normal - not having a whole lot to do. :/

Thank you so much for writing for me. I hope that you don't stress about it, and enjoy both the process and the result.

Please note, all these are suggestions - a jumping-off point. Don't feel you absolutely must come up with the scenarios I've depicted to please me; just write the fandom and the friendship that we've matched on the way you see it, and I will love reading the result!

Mélusine by Sarah Monette is a very long, very good, very fucked-up H/C darkfic in a canon I don't know.

That's not necessarily a criticism, by the way, it's enough my id that I have spent many a delightful lost weekend voluntarily reading exactly that sort of thing.

Anyway, I enjoyed it enough that it is getting kept (after all, some day I might not be able to find fanfic like this on the internet anymore) but I don't think I care enough about the non-id parts to go looking up the canon. (If I did I would probably just end up really liking Shannon, anyway, and like I said it's really obvious there is like 0 fic about him.)

And still very annoyed that it had exactly nothing to do with Mélusine; if someone tried to name a fantasy novel Cinderella and then not have anything to do with Cinderella except, like, the ruling family having a shoe in their heraldry and also there was a fairy godmother as a minor character in one chapter, nobody would let you get away with that.

Also, it got me re-reading a bunch of old Doctor/Master fic just in time for me to be mildly optimistic about the show again, so there's that.

Juniper Time by Kate Wilhelm was not a bad book, and I'm glad I read it, but I also don't think I need to keep it, and I didn't particularly like it. It gets the "if you like this sort of thing, this is probably the sort of thing you will like" rating, with a caveat for me being unsure about its portrayal of First Nations people. The first thing that struck me is that it didn't feel like a SF novel, or even a genre novel at all really. I spent a lot of time thinking about why. It's a story about the building of an international space station and first contact with aliens set amid the collapse of Western capitalist civilization, so it ought to be an SF novel. It's definitely at least partly just the writing style. But I think it's mostly a question of what the book thinks is important, fr. ex: not the space station or the aliens or even particularly the collapse of civilization except as they affect the two main characters' many personal issues, which are the only thing the narrative actually seems to think we might be interested in. Whic isn't to say I don't like a character-focused SF novel, but an SF novel where one of the main characters is an astronomer who spends half his time in space, a) I would expect it to spend more than five pages actually in space, and b) I would expect him to not spend all of those five pages thinking about nothing but his marital issues. Also, you know, I 100% don't care about the dude's personal issues and am only mildly interested in hers.

I am glad I have read this but am pretty sure I will never desire to read it again, so K pile it is. And it inspired me to finish Always Coming Home, so it was definitely worth it.

I went to bed early last night and I slept like a rock. I should not still be sleepy! Arrgh!

Wednesday reading meme:

What I've just finished
Caliban's War by James S.A. Corey, which I enjoyed a lot, mainly because Avasarala is the best and also Bobbie! ♥ Holden still needs a lot of punching though. Ugh. Why is this guy the main character? Not only is he a dead bore, he's a ridiculously common dead bore!

I like TV!Prax better than book!Prax, I think, but I also think the show compresses the timeline in a way that means I don't get bored with a character having repetitive beats, the way I can, and do in this case, in a book.

What I'm reading now
Still, I picked up Abaddon's Gate and started it this morning, so I'm still entertained enough to continue.

What I'm reading next
The next book in this series, probably. I don't even know what the name of it is. *looks it up* Ah, Cibola Burn.

I also read two really long stories that both turned out to be in progress, which I probably should have noticed but didn't. I mean, when I see a thing is 175K words long, I figure it's done. I mean, who has that much to say in one story? But no. Sigh.

In my recent fanfic readings, I learned that I will nope out of a story if you kill off Wedge Antilles. Which was a surprise to me - how strongly my kneejerk NOPE was - but there you go. Do not want! (I mean, I don't care for any character death in my fic, and generally not in canon either! but I get that some AU premises require it. But like Bartleby the scrivener, I would prefer not to.)

I also learned that I don't really ship Bodhi with anyone but if I did it would have to be Jyn and Cassian. Gotta keep the Star Wars OT3 pattern going, I guess. I just don't find Jyn and Cassian all that compelling. *hands* I'd much rather read about Baze and Chirrut being the most married. (I think Rebels is the only place that doesn't have an OT3, but I am okay with that. I'm already bracing for Kanan and Hera to get an undeserved tragic ending.)

I also realized that in addition to believing that Luke Skywalker is asexual, I believe Anakin is demisexual, and both Leia and Padme are bisexual. Ahsoka is mostly into women except that I also ship her with Anakin (and Rex, a little), so there are exceptions? And Obi-Wan is pansexual and flirting his way across the galaxy at any given moment.

Which is probably more than anyone cared to know about my Star Wars head canons. *snerk*

Tony Abbot Is Not Voldemort: or when dramatic licence overcomes accuracy.
There is no Voldemort in Australian politics. We are fortunate not to have an evil that absolute.

We Can Revive Our Story: Indigenous Australians rewriting their traditional food songs to incorporate western nutrition so their future generations can learn. An example of cultural adaptation?

Faith, Politics, and Culture
Despotism As A Function Of Absolute Capitalism: with money,
you will be "more free"?
In one respect, Buchanan was right: there is an inherent conflict between what he called “economic freedom” and political liberty. Complete freedom for billionaires means poverty, insecurity, pollution and collapsing public services for everyone else. Because we will not vote for this, it can be delivered only through deception and authoritarian control. The choice we face is between unfettered capitalism and democracy. You cannot have both.

Viome, Greece: Where Capitalism Failed: it's a little bit of an existence on the edge, but it's also a glimpse of what a society without capitalism might look like.

Again in Greece: Arabic Refugees Making The Better World In Defiance Of The Soulless West: Again, illegal, but a far better version of humanity than we frequently see in our 'civilised' societies.

"Women Should Not Teach Men" - 1 Timothy 2 In Context: A letter about a local situation is turned into a church wide blanket statement because of the pride of men. Exegesis goes back to the Koine Greek.

It's Not About Race: white people, culture, and being forced into a discussion that most of them don't even recognise is weighted.

Is Demography Destiny For Democrats? The Short Answer Is 'No'. Jason Kander, whom a political friend told me to keep an eye on, has a few interesting things to say about Demographics and the Democratic Party.

Evangelicals And 'The Left': Is There That Much Difference In Attitude?
Have you noticed how Fundamentalist preachers are always proclaiming that there’s some fuller experience of blessing available to their congregations, one they themselves have achieved but for which the listener has to keep striving (or giving)?

Well, according to Frances Lee, the Left does the same: “In trying to liberate readers from the legitimately oppressive structures, I worry that [certain] sites… are replacing them with equally restrictive orthodoxy on the other end of the political spectrum.”
An interesting perspective on 'purity culture' on the left-wing, where any failure to be absolutely progressive isn't just a place where someone has to learn, but a permanent and unchangeable moral failing that can only be responded to by outcasting.

Work was fine, tomorrow is our Strategic Retreat, which is a little ominously named, especially since it has the potential to determine my future job prospects... And also the last day of filming.

We had a family meeting to talk about how we need to do better at keeping house... I guess we'll see if that has any impact.

Early bed for me I think. I'm wiped despite a mini-nap earlier.

Because it's not a fandom until there's a Highlander crossover...

This is 17776, aka something with some kinda cool space stuff, and absolutely terrible worldbuilding I cannot even express. I was mostly bored by the football stuff, although there were occassional interesting bits to me. But oh my god, guys, the worldbuilding, it burns us, precious. Hey, authors, just a thought, but when you have to lampshade twice how bad the worldbuilding is, maybe you should possibly just revise the thing instead?

Anyway, here's a drabble.

So I was trying to work out how to make a crack crossover work and I realized I am very not-clear on a vital aspect of The Martian canon. That is: how many surface-to-orbit vessels are there, and how do they work?

The Ares crew took some kind of lander down to the planet, which remained there(?), since Mark uses the jet fuel to make water, yes? He's all happy that Martinez piloted them so well, there's still stuff left. And they took the MAV back to the Hermes, and the MAV had been pre-sent so it could charge itself.

However, the original lander is not good enough for getting back to orbit, since Mark has to go to the other MAV. But is he going there since that would be a good place to meet up with the next mission, or is he going there because there'd be no way for him to go up from his site to meet up with the rest of the new crew on the Hermes? Can the original lander not "charge itself" like the MAVs can? I do not remember if they took it apart to make the Habs/the rovers/anything else, so it's possible it's not even in the correct form to be useful for that purpose anymore.

Anyone remember this off hand? Am I doomed to a deep-dive canon review over this? Basically what I want to be able to do is have Ares 3 go up to the Hermes, wait a couple days, then take the MAV, or something else, down to the planet again.

Last week's winner was Enchantress From the Stars! Looking forward to it. From discussion in the comments, I think I attempted to write that story once when I was about twelve.

The loser on overall K votes was Pebble in the Sky, but I'm invoking the rule that says a K winner must also have a majority for K votes, which Pebble in the Sky didn't have, and giving it to the Stasheff instead.

(I also just noticed that I never announced a K for the LGBT-themed week. No book in that poll had a majority of K votes - or anything close to a majority, even - so I'm not calling a K. The overall most K votes was the David Gerrold book, but it had almost twice as many f/m votes as K, so I have added it to the F pile instead.)

Responses to Mélusine and Juniper Time coming later today, I promise.

This week, a friend assigned me Humorous SF, so here we go!

How FMK works, short version: I am trying to clear out my unreads. So there is a poll, in which you get to pick F, M, or K. F means I should spend a night of wild passion with the book ASAP, and then decide whether to keep it or not. M means I should continue to commit to a long-term relationship of sharing my bedroom with it. K means it should go away immediately. Anyone can vote, you don't have to actually know anything about the books.

I pick a winner on Friday night (although won't actually close the poll, people can still vote,) and report results/ post the new poll on the following Tuesday, and write a response to the F winner sometime in the next week. That will leave me only four books behind, whoo.

Link to long version of explanation (on first poll)

Poll: Brust, Dickson, Doctorow, Foster, Gardner, Hines, Jones, Laumer, Martinez, Moore J, Moore MJ, Pinkwater, Pratchett, Robinson, anthologies )
musesfool: Daisy Ridley as Rey with lightsaber (you were not mine to save)
You've all been watching Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, right? Leia, Rey, Ahsoka, Padme, Jyn! They're so adorable! I might be shipping Leia and Sabine a little bit now too. At least I said, "NOW KISS" at the end of "Bounty of Trouble." *g*

I caught this week's Orphan Black.

Today was a day of intense grumpyness.

Tomorrow may just be annoyingly chaotic.

I am hovering at the edge of things at work, and there's nothing to do in the margins. I feel like, on the whole, I ought to be better at finding ways in if that's what I want, or finding other things to do if it isn't, but no, I'm not doing anything. I feel frustratingly useless. I'm sure there must be something I could be doing that would be helpful but when I do try things I just get hung up when I need outside input. It is not a very satisfying life, and it is leading me to be easily frustrated with other things. Or maybe that's something else? I really can't tell anymore if something is a legitimate concern or just my levels of frustration being generally out of control and seeking any possible outlet. Ugh.

Five things make a post:

A. I had a most excellent birthday dinner on Saturday evening. L and I went to Uva, which I had never been to before and it was so worth it. They have an adorable little courtyard in back, so we sat outside and drank a lot of wine (A LOT OF WINE) and ate like queens.

2. I was going to make myself a birthday cake, but then I was sad and also I wasn't sure it would be good and I didn't want to make a cake that big and have it be terrible (because then I couldn't foist half of it off on my coworkers). That would just be one disappointment too far. I still want to make it though. It looks amazing. And terrible. But mostly amazing. (I would have made fresh whipped cream though instead of using Cool Whip. I'm not much of a food snob, but fresh whipped cream just tastes better, regardless of authenticity.)

iii. The A Wrinkle in Time trailer looks fantastic.

D. Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Behind the Scenes. I might have burst into tears when Carrie Fisher said, "It's all about family," but you can't prove it!

5. I posted a story for my birthday:

Sing a New Song (@AO3)
Star Wars; Vader, Leia, Luke, Obi-Wan; AU; g; 4,130 words
In which Ben has a bad feeling, Luke makes it to Tosche Station, Leia takes control of the situation, and no one understands how hard Vader's life is.

This is the sequel to Just a Little Bit of History Repeating but probably not the one that people were asking for. *hands* I'm probably never going to write a long involved epic AU where they actually overthrow Palpatine. I'm just not that kind of writer. I just want the fraught family reunions where the Skywalkers get to be all ~dramatic~ at each other.

I don't usually write multiple POV stories anymore, but this one seemed to require it, so we could see Luke's "Wtf?!", Obi-Wan's "I have a bad feeling about this," Leia's ability to roll with the weirdness (and also ameliorate the tension between Vader and Obi-Wan), and Vader's misguided belief that he has control of anything, let alone his kids.

As I said in an endnote on AO3, the title is from U2's "40" (and not the Mountain Goats' "Psalms 40:2"*) and I kind of feel like the title of the concluding story of this little trilogy should also come from Psalm 40 but right now it's tentatively titled "How Soon Is Now" for ~reasons. I still have to figure out how to actually write it. Because I couldn't leave Ahsoka out! The story was originally going to end with that - I felt like Vader saying "no, there's someone else" was kind of analogous to Yoda's "no, there is another," but given that it was Luke's section, I thought he ought to have the last word.

Anyway, I like how it turned out, and I'm glad some other people did too. *g*

*which I still think should have a SPN vid made to it, and from which I already used the title "If I'm Not Beyond Repair" for Bucky, or you know I'd be using that for a Star Wars story ("Lord, send me a mechanic, if I'm not beyond repair" could definitely be a Vader and Luke story, you know? Though I could probably do something with "in the burning fuselage of my days" or even "feel bad about the things we do along the way, but not really that bad" if the right story idea struck. Huh. *adds them to the list of titles to use someday*)
