a quick update

Work was predictably dull.

Knitting was great! I'm getting well into chart 10 (of 13) for Puled by the Sunset. It's very pretty

We walked home, which my hip tolerated, and I have been ding a few basic stretches before bed, which will hopefully help? It feels nice, anyway, though it actually has been making sleeping weird :p I feel like I should go to the doctor but also like going to the doctor is just going to be a giant PITA and maybe not worthwhile. I cant guarantee that any of the individual things bothering me will eb acting up, I'm terrible at describing symptoms, and I don't think there is anything they can do for me anyway :| Diagnosis: I'm old and have not been sufficiently gentle on my body. Probably they will also say I'm overweight and that will help :p pleh

Sad Half Elf Gets Better At Job He Hates

I finished The Goblin Emperor tonight. The title is my summary. It was good but not stunning - the story was slow, the intrigues not always very intriguing. The worldbuilding was basically a generic fantasy court with fancy window dressing - very detailed in some cases, but inconsistently so. The main character was nice, but sometimes just really painfully naive and I wanted to smack him. At times he was just oppressively glum. I'm not really sure that he changed as a person, he just got more used to things and more familiar with what was expected of him, so even as a character piece I didn't find it deeply satisfying. He wasn't really interested in things that were going on, so it led to a lot of exposition. There were some good and surprising scenes with various characters, where Maia learns that they are, in fact, fully realized persons in their own right, which are nice. But the conflicts seemed mostly too easily resolved. I liked the pseudo communists? It was enjoyable enough and I'm glad I finally read it, but I'm not sure on what basis it was nominated for so many awards.

Other than that - the strategic planning session thing at work was good, except it went too long in the beginning and we didn't get time to do enough of the actual *planning* work. I still think it was useful - everyone is basically agreed that we need to hire an interpretive planner. there is something regarding the beginning of a plan to make a plan to seriously figure out what merging SA is going to be, though there are still some elephants in the room that haven't been addressed. I had/got to point out that the inventory system for SA is completely inappropriate for a museum because it doesn't have object tracking capabilities - you can only know where objects are if they are in a box. Not good enough. I got to hear N talk crap out of his ass and *also* talk high level archaeological theory and spot the difference ;p When he does the former I want to smack him - when he does the latter I often find myself agreeing with him, which is refreshing. Anyway - I think I'm probably a weirdo because I actually enjoy those sorts of things, except for the part where it is supposed to also be a networking thing and you should probably talk to absolutely anyone outside of the session about the things discussed, and not just run and hide in your office because you can. After a crazy start of the week, though, it's back to normal - not having a whole lot to do. :/

Day Two

Today is a day of intense tiredness. I'd almost blame PM's but the timing is all wrong. Ugh, bodies. Ovulation, maybe? Because I need everything to get more intense, that's just peachy.

Work was fine, tomorrow is our Strategic Retreat, which is a little ominously named, especially since it has the potential to determine my future job prospects... And also the last day of filming.

We had a family meeting to talk about how we need to do better at keeping house... I guess we'll see if that has any impact.

Early bed for me I think. I'm wiped despite a mini-nap earlier.

Day One

Today was a day of intense grumpyness.

Tomorrow may just be annoyingly chaotic.

I am hovering at the edge of things at work, and there's nothing to do in the margins. I feel like, on the whole, I ought to be better at finding ways in if that's what I want, or finding other things to do if it isn't, but no, I'm not doing anything. I feel frustratingly useless. I'm sure there must be something I could be doing that would be helpful but when I do try things I just get hung up when I need outside input. It is not a very satisfying life, and it is leading me to be easily frustrated with other things. Or maybe that's something else? I really can't tell anymore if something is a legitimate concern or just my levels of frustration being generally out of control and seeking any possible outlet. Ugh.

How long to make a habit?

Not long to break it, anyway.

I didn't post the last few days because I was busy devouring Martha Wells' new book, and the last of the Books of the Raksura, The Harbors of the Sun.

It was great! The story resolve, finally, quite satisfactorily, and the character stuff was also excellent. I kind of want to re-read the first one, The Cloud Roads, so I can fully appreciate how far things have come. There was stuff that I was hoping for based on the last book that was realized, and in some cases I got even more that I was hoping for! I'm satisfied and happy but also sad both that the book is over and that I know she isn't planning on publishing more about the characters. However She said she will do some more stuff o the Patreon, so I have that to look forward to at least!

I think my mulberry dying saga is over....for now. My yarn is dry, and I just need to take pictures. I'm debating doing a test for colourfastness but I'm kind of afraid of what will happen after all that work :p I still need to work out what the yardage if yarn I have is and what I can even make with it. I've done the counting, I just need to find out what the length is of one loop and do the math. I'm hoping I have enough to make a tanktop but I'm not super hopeful because I'm not super small and I like the to come down over my hips. Depending on close I am I am contemplating getting a skein of plain cotton worsted and dyeing it, also with mulberries but making sure it does *not* get any iron, and using is as the final gradient... we'll see, I guess! I kind of like the idea of one garment with three colours from the same plant, but I'm learning that cotton is kind of a pain.

Hmmmm, what else do I have to report? I don't have any stories on the go atm, thiough I *did* enter a tumblr exchange and so I have a Voltron story to write once I figure out the best way to approach it. The exchange is supposed to be 'pg-13' rated which means I need to think through my ideas and make sure they don't go too dark on me. Probably some recip stalking is in order?

Not 100% sure what I am doing with the rest of my day - no Thirteen, but maybe some other kind of game?

Game Night!

Tonight was our pathfinder game which we have affectionately termed 'The Fuck Squad'. We continue to horrify/terrify.befuddle our newbie GM, but she keeps inviting us back! Probably because we have the best snacks. Tonight we had: nanaimo bars, earl grey tea short bread, oat meal cookies, chips, local cherries and raspberries, and chocolate dip for the fruit. And cider. And I think I might be forgetting something? Also oreos I guess

I apparently touched something I shouldn't have with my left middle finger, because the skin blistered and is peeling (doesn't hurt, but it looks like it's wrinkled form being in water too long). I have no idea what I could have touched with just that one finger that wuld have that effect o_O

Also I did an Ask meme on Tumblr, to whit:
Fic writing questions!
  • So reblog this if I can pop into your box and ask you questions about writing (You can probably make a version for art, too). And you can ask them to me if you really want to.
  • Specify fandom if you want for any of the questions.
  • 1. Which is your favorite of the fics you've written for X fandom?
  • 2. Favorite piece overall?
  • 3. Which was the hardest to write, in terms of plot?
  • 4. Which has the most "you" in it, however you'd define that?
  • 5. What is an image/set of images that you're particularly proud of?
  • 6. Idea that you always wanted to write but could never make work?
  • 7. Least favorite plot point/chapter/moment?
  • 8. Favorite plot point/chapter/moment?
  • 9. Favorite character to write?
  • 10. Favorite line or lines of dialogue that you've written
  • 11. If I'm showing off just one of your pieces to someone, which one should it be?
  • 12. What WIPs do you have going now? Are you excited about them?
  • 13. Are there any things that might have happened in any of your stories, but you changed them at the last minute? (So-and-so dies, they don't actually kiss, main character has long extended ballet-based dream sequence, etc.)
  • 14. Would you want to write canon for any of your fandoms (like be hired by showrunner to do an episode)? Which one?
  • 15. Does font matter to you when you're writing a draft?
  • 16. 3 favorite comments ever received on fanfic.
  • 17. Any mean comments? How'd you deal with it? Who laid the smackdown?
  • 18. If you could go back and revise one of your older stories, which would it be?
  • 19. Do you make up scenes at work/on the bus/at the gym? Who are the characters that pop up the most? Do you write them down?
  • 20. Go nuts, and talk about writing. Or write me a little ficlet-whatsit using a character/image/line I shall now specify:
  • Go on, my chickens, and ask each other questions

... and Nary asked me three, which I answered:

6. Idea that you always wanted to write but could never make work?

- I have so many!  Mostly I run out of energy for writing them, so they remain WiPs.  I have some probably-novel-length story ideas that I know I will never get down, just because they’re too big for me to manage.  One is based on a superhero character I came up with and never really played, but I’ve fleshed out significantly in my mind…about a girl who finds out that her father was basically an alien prince who fled here after a coup… I think the story is too big, and I also don’t think I have the cultural knowledge I’d need to write it well and do the characters justice without a whoooole lot of research and some good sensitivity readers.

9.  Favorite character to write?

-I’m not sure I have one, honestly.  It varies with my mood and interests of the moment.  The better I understand them the easier they are to write though, so that means a lot of RPG characters and OCs, but that doesn’t necessarily make them my favourites (except maybe in that moment).

16.  3 favorite comments ever received on fanfic.

Ummm, hmmm.  *ages later after reading through a million comments*

Well, other than the ones that went ‘I love this story and wold like to accept it for publication in X’… Mostly they are Exchange Squee - one where an author I really like called the fic I wrote for them ‘absolutely brilliant’, one where the comment was just really long and loving and super detailed pulling out a lot of quotes and talking about the themes and such, and one non-recip comment on a drabble written for an exchange that was basically “I really couldn’t believe that was only 100 words, how did you do that to my emotions.”

.... but if anyone wants to ask me more questions here, have at!

Another one joins the club

One of my local friends had her PhD defense today! I went out after work to join her and some other peeps for food and drinks to celebrate.

I also got my yarn dyed! Mistakes were made. for one, I left the skein in the modified dye for waaaaaaaay too long. Apparently it can damage the fiber if it is in too long.... hopefully that doesn't happen. Also I may have used way more than I needed... The package said 2% of weight of fiber, but the internet said even less, and I think it was right. This became evident when I went to rinse out the non iron modified skein in the same bucket (which I thought I had at least rinsed out pretty well), and it modified that skein too. Whoops! It isn't as dark, but it definitely lost some of its brightness. I'll get pics once they're dry.

I am not entirely sure what I am going to do with them though.... they're not really my colour, and I don't have enough to make what I had been hoping to, which is a little tank top :/ Maybe I can get some more of something similar and do it up.... I am sure I could get more mulberries... Hmm.

In the pots!

Work was hectic and a little dumb today, but tonight I got my yarn in the mulberries! I'll take it out tomorrow night. I put some iron modifier in one of the pots, but it didn't seem to do much - I think it has more of an effect on animal fibers? It looks nice and dark purple anyway, so I hope that sticks!

The nature of the beast meant my evening was pretty broken up, so I didn't get much else done tonight. Also I think I'm coming down with the cough that the boys have. Ugh! Summer colds are balls. But I'm coughing and m throat is sore :(

Gonna take a shower and try to head to bed. Hopefully sleep will help.

IN other news I still haven't gotten my hardcover of Harbors of the Sun! I know it was released, and other places have it in stock.... But despite preordering (just a few days pre, but still!) the site is still saying they don't know when it will be released. IT IS ALREADY OUT, GIMME MY BOOOK GD IT.

Meanwhile, I started reading The Goblin Emperor on my commute. I'm leaving on an earlier bus, which gives me 10 minutes more to kill in the am, and I don't have a portable knitting project atm, so.... Book!

And oh, SPEAKING of books, I got the draft copy of Ride the Star Wind, so I got to see the art for my story :D Its pretty great, and is exactly what I figured someone might draw from that story :3 I also got an acknowledgment of my other story submissions today, so maybe that's a good sign?

Technically a post

Busy day at work, but there were cupcakes when I got home! Mind you we already have actual cake, and nanaimo bars.... but still! They were really good

Tomorrow is also going to be odd at work, but we'll see how it goes.

back to normal

Well it isn't *midnight* yet so I guess that's not a total backslide :P

Nug party was today. Other than than, Diablotin! Which was a good session even if it was a bit temporally scattered since not everyone (including me) could make the regular time. Party was good - Nugsy had a great time and really that's the most important. The weather was pretty much perfect! And we have So Much Cake left over @_@

I watched all the Star Wars Whatsists of Destiny shorts tonight with Nary, but really it just made me want mooooooar! I'm sad that this will be the last season of Rebels :( But at least new movies will be out soon?

I think that's all I've got. I need to go shower (for really really real this time) and go to bed. At least I eventually remembered to take care of the kitty (food + box cleaning)...

2017-07-08 08:12 pm

Someday I will figure out a clever titling scheme and maybe get new icons...

Today I got 970g more mulberries, which I am recording here because I can't find my dyeing notebook. I certainly have enough now, anyway! I just need the time to make the dye and do the dyeing :3 I didn't actually have to pick the berries, as I ran into some fellow foragers who'd cleaned the tree using a tarp and a rake - they really do just fall off the tree, so this is a pretty efficient way of harvesting them!

Today I didn't have anything specific to do and no deadlines for anything, which is kind of nice. I did a bunch of house cleaning (mostly vaccuming) and tidied my room a bit, and started a Diablotin ficlet (which I may yet finish!). I also spent a lot of time on tumblr.

Tomorrow is the casual birthday party for my youngest nephew, who turned 5 on the 5th. Pizza and some games at the park! It is supposed t be really nice out, at least. I think it will be a small attendance. Weterogue has been working on a Stampycat cake... Longpig had got all the stuff for a cool minecraft cake and then Nugsy changed his mind at literally the last minute. But what he wanted is actually simpler and we still have all the things we need, so I guess why not :/ This came about because they got a stampycat book (from a charityshop) that has a cake in it, so the minecraft project was probably doomed.... although it was going to be super cool.

Posting before the day is out for once so.... hopefully I will get more things done tonight :)

I forgot to mention the other day but I submitted two stories - a new pirate one, and also Cursed Wreck (a lovecraftian shipwreck story I've been shopping around for a while) to an anthology on pirates and ghosts. So wait and see how that goes I guess :3

Zzzzzzzz

I am home!

Technically I was home yesterday, I was just too busy/rushed to post.

Camping was great!

Today was super busy at work (and a little annoying), including spending an hour on the bus to run an errand. And then it took me *three hours* to get home, because three buses just....didn't come when they were supposed to. I finally gave up and took a different, longer route, but because I was delayed so long I got caught in a frigging HAIL STORM waiting for the bus and then *still* had to wait another half an hour to catch my transfer (because it was late enough that they'd stopped running more regularly), and then another half an hour to acutally get home, for a total of aboth tree hours between leaving work and actually getting home. So I was tired and my back hurts and I wound up eatng my rage, and you get this post instead of one about how Jola was such a good girl when we were camping (but she was).

So Camp!

I'm going camping tomorrow! I haven't been actually *camping* in forever. I have done related activities, like larp, or like renfest camping, but not go to a park and set up a tent and explore around, in many years. Although I think it will not be a ton of hardcore exploring - there are a few trails, and a beach. I'm bringing Jola though, so that should be fun! Anyway, I hope that it all goes smooth, as Nary is not a Camping type person and is basically just indulging me <3

We're leaving around noon tomorrow after we pck up some stuff at the store. Wheee! But also obviously I won't be around to post stuff, so peace out, friends!

and again

I really hate basically losing a day to antihistamines. I don't know that I ever competely woke up. I did get some stuff done though:

-I got online to talk about game stuff
-I played Cards against Diablotin
-I got my yarn in the mordant bath
-I picked more berries
-I made a mediocre cobbler
-I helped move a kid bed (again)
-I mostly finished this pirate story?

Other things I'm forgetting probably? Now I'm super tired though, and I should already be in bed, bleh. work tomorrow, though I'm planning to leave a bit early.

Loooong day

My Canada day was mostly making nanaimo bars and spending 5 hours detangling yarn @_@ So I dond't get to the rest of the stuff on my list, clearly ;p But there is always tomorrow, I guess? I went over to a friend's place with Nary to watch some stuff, and it turns out he has three cats, so I took a reactine and my ability to stay coherent is rapidly fading, to the detriment of my desire to do some writing. Also, perhaps predictably after spending 5 hours detangling yarn (500 grams of worsted weight cotton, now in two skeins), my hands are sore. Those were some giant balls :p

I feel like I had more to ay, but now it is gone. I blame the reactine.

Busy!

Today was a suuuuper busy day in the end.

I went down town around noon to pick up some bras I'd ordered, and didn't make it home until almost 6! then after dinner I went out and picked a bunch of mulberries - tomorrow I'm hoping to get my yarn split and re-mordanted, and then I can mash up the berries for dye! I'll probably need more than I have (hough I have close to 2 pounds) because mostly what I have learned with these things is that it takes a *lot* of dyestuffs. Anyway, after that, Nary got here, yay!

Tomorrow is the 150th anniversary of Canada's confederation, but there are some legit reasons not to necessarily just jump right into celebrating, but take a moment to reflect about how we got here, what came before, and what kinds of improvements nd chances we need to work towards. Which I have been trying to at least think about, though downtown today was mostly Canada 150 stuff. I helped with the VR at the work booth for a bit, and watched a raptor (bird) educational display with the kids and took them to get their faces painted. I also bought the stuff to make nanaimo bars, so that has to happen tomorrow too! busy busy....

Zzzzzz

I don't remember if the last time I updated was yesterday or the day before.

Work has been odd. But I have tomorrow off (my stat holiday substitute for Canada day being on Saturday). And Nary will be here tomorrow night as she has a course on the weekend. I work on Monday, but then she and I are going camping for three days - with Jola. Adventure! We'll see how it goes I guess :3 Tuesday is also my youngest nephew's birthday!

I'm hoping to go downtown for a bit tomorrow. I also need to finish my pirate story, which I utterly failed to work on tonight. Instead - tumblr and gaming. Hi tumblr!

And now - good night!

dyeing stuff

I had another course today, but I was so tired that I don't think I retained too much. Fortunately we get the notes. I also failed to run an errand, so maybe I can do that on... Monday? Ugh. Not tomorrow, which will be way busy, and not on Friday when the university is closed (everyone else is taking the stat holiday for Canada day on Monday but the university is not, which means I am not either, because we follow their schedule). And next week I'm going camping! Which I hope will be fun :3 Nary and I are going - I need to start making a list of things we will need (like a battery operated air pump :p). We're also taking Jola, which will be an Interesting Adventure!

But I meant to write about dyeing, whoops! I asked for advice on the ravelry natural dyeing community and got some advice and two options for the cotton that didn't take. I re-scoured it (and really should have done the same with the linen, but I'll leave that for another time) by washing it on hot in the washer with just washing soda. Now I have two options: treat it as partly mordanted, and go the three step alum--> tannis --> alum method, or use aluminum acetate instead. I thiiiink I will go with option two, because it is faster (it doesn't take three days, or more be cause I don't actually have any tannin solution on hand), and I now own some :V I found out that one of the local-ish shops ( I buy online but it comes in like a day because they are in a nearby town) carries alllll kinds of dyeing things, including plant dyestuffs if I want to get into the exotics. They *also* had a book on local dye materials that was compiled by a spinning and weaving guild in the 80s, so score! I bought that, clearly. Its pretty thick and I can already see tat there is stuff that will be different from my experience, but it has a lot of useful info on *locally* available dye plants. So yes! super excited! I also bought some iron mordant...

Maybe I'll start some more stuff this weekend? It's a good season for it...

But now, bed!

NO excuse

For leaving this until the last minute :p

I got 2/3 things on my to do list done - the raspberries weren't quite ripe, but I got my Nigerian food and I did a bit more writing. And there was game, and I got some answers/options for what to do with my cotton yarn.

As far as it being a successful weekend, I can't remember anything that I am supposed to do next week at work, so I think that is a win!

And now - goodnight!

Good but busy day

The new raid system in Pokemon is up and working, and I got to try it out today! I did two raids, because that's how many passes I had, and solo'd them both. After you beat the raid boss, you have a chance to catch it, and I caught the first (a Magmar, meh) but not the second (a Croconaw), which ate about half my raspberries and then ran away, the little jerk! I am enjoying the new features and the nicer weather, anyway.

And the weather has been nice the past day and a bit, but generally all over the place! Today was just about a perfect temperature and sunny, but then we had a thunderstorm in the afternoon and then it cleared up again and is nice. My windows are open, even! And the actual raspberries in the park are juuuuust about ready to start picking. The mulberries are go as well, so I'm going to try and start collecting some of them for dyeing. And maybe eating? I don't find them especially tasty but they're okay... assuming they're the same here as in Texas, anyway.

There was an international food festival this weekend! I went downtown with Longpig and the Eldest and met another friend there. We wandered and munched (I had some plantains and a really damned good bifana and a churro and a rib and some Nigerian hibiscus drink I forget the name of. Zobo, thank you google! There was a lot of other stuff around but I want to go back to the Nigerian table tomorrow if I can - everything there looked amazing but I was already full by that point :(

I also bought pants! There is apparently a Canadian company called SweetLegs that does really nice leggings, and there was a woman there selling them, and they were black with skulls on, and they fit and were super comfy and soft, so sold! And the people Longpig bought her "harem"-style pants from last year at a different festival were there, so I got a pair in black because I have been envying them for ages. So I am probably set for pants forever now :p

After that I napped for a good chunk of the afternoon, then started a pirate story for that anthology, then cooked some steak on the bbq. It mostly turned out really well, I think, though the coal distribution was a little uneven and cramped, so it cold have been better. The story is, well, started anyway. I have some ideas for it but am still figuring out how to pull them all together. I also need to read some more early 18th century stuff because my voice is off. I mean I don't want to completely write in that style because no one wants that, but I want enough turns of phrase to be suggestive without all the run on sentences and random Capitalization and such.

Tomorrow I have game, but in the evening, so I think my priorities are going to be writing, eating (if I can make it back to the food festiva), and fruit gathering. Om nom nom!

ETA: And then I stayed up until 1:30 making a minecraft ship because reasons???
